or brave enough to play three at the back?
I have spent all day at work thinking about possible formations and who will/wont get the nod when all our players are fit
Without any new signings, and taking into account that most sides play one/two up front max, I have come up with the following formation
3-4-1-2
Sorro
Danny Ab Faye Shawcross
Lenny Delap Salif/Amdy (holding midfielder) Etherington
Sidibe
Kitson/Fuller/Beattie (any two from three)
Even omitting a full back, leaves no room for the likes of Olifinjana, Whelan, Soares, Tonge, one of the holding midfielders, and means that one of Kitson, Fuller or Beattie will be on the bench
Oh what problems to have
Could this be a possibility
Keegan introduced 3-5-2 at Man City, and was largely very successful with it, and also produced a lot of open games of football
Would TP be brave or clever enough to do this taking into account the players we now have at our disposal

Keegan wasn't THAT successful with it in the Prem. He spent a fuckton and finished 9th one season and 16th the next, and then did his customary midnight flit the next season when he was starting to get found out.
To be honest, I think, nice idea though it is, we all know that "open games of football" are not exactly our manager's bag, and I think, in our current position, that formation would be suicide.

He's certainly clever enough.
Clever enough to not try that!

Is Pulis clever enough or brave enough to play three at the back?
With the greatest of respect mate it wouldn't be clever or brave it would be ... We don't have to try and shoe horn all our best players into a starting eleven. I had enough of Gudjon's barmy 3-5-2 fromations to last a life time. Pulis will start with four at the back in every game he plays in the Prem, of that you can be certain.

OK - Im not saying play that formation, all Im trying to do is work out a formation whereby important players are accommodated
Playing another full back in the side I have picked can only mean two things - Delap would miss out (as TP will always play the holding midfielder), and Sidibe would not start (yet threads galore have been saying how Mama is missed and we cant wait for him to return)
And it still does not even accomodate Whelan, who has also had many rave reviews on this board since getting into the side.

He frequently did last season. I think both Mama and Fuller have played the impact sub role well in the past, although away from home I'd always start with Mama.

I fear we'll have enough suspensions and injuries for TP never to have the "problem" of picking from a full strength squad.

It's not neccessary mate. Work out your preffered formation and then chose the players to fit it, you can give a game to the others next week.

One of the problems with England teams in recent years has been the attempts by managers to fit all our "best" players into them. That lead to Gerrard and Lampard playing together in games which cried out for a proper holding midfielder.
As said above TP should choose his preferred formation and then pick the best players to make it work and try to aviod square pegs and round holes as much as possible.

Yep I agree Lakeland - same problem with Gerrard and Rooney - they both like to 'wander' around the pitch - not room for both of them and to think Stoke have similar problems!
Strength in depth and Stoke in the same sentence, how good is that.
