It just proves that TP could see exactly what was lacking from the team and isnt just a stubborn fu**er! Etherington will be superb, and if he gets off to a good start so will Beattie.

I think that was BBM HG and fromafar I think they also said Stoke would never get promotion and would be humiliated to the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal. Apparently they are very knowledgable too and BBM is often referred to as 'the oracle' (only by himself though ;D ) Isn't strange people that talk the most crap are the ones that have to hide behind millions of new user names! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/KYqg3pYeaerc5lD_P7BR.gif)

I don't know - who didn't say Pulis "coulnt" sign players? Last I heard he's a renowned wheeler-dealer.

Players are motivated by one thing......money. Notice how now there's more money in the pot he's better at attracting them.

I think we struggled to attract quality in the summer because we were tipped to do a Derby. We're now reaping the benefits of dispelling that stigma.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there RVD. The longer we can sustain premirship status the better the players we will attract. I bet Wigan never thought they would have the likes of Heskey, Zaki and Valencia et al playing for them a few years ago. The same with Bolton and Anelka. Fingers crossed with our new signings we can survive our first year and shove it right down the likes of TalkShite and Gary Linekers throat.

Its like Etherington said, the main reason he came was Pulis. He is a credible manager, far more so than the likes of Adams, Mowbray and southgate IMO!

bickstoke - you make a valid point. Pulis sin't the most exciting manager around and he certainly isn't a tactical genius but, most of the time, he is competant. Amazingly, there are several managers in the Premiership who you can't say that about.
Even some of the managers of the top clubs are not as consistently good as you might expect. For example, in not starting with two strikers on Saturday, Benitez played into our hands and made life much easier than it should have been and Wenger's refusal to include a few players who can "mix it" in his young squad may cost them a place in the top four - and hence a place in the Champions League next season.

I did!
But previously Pulis has gone for too many unrealisttic targets. Now it's easier, we have shown we can compete with many other teams, and if we stay up, it'll be even easier next season to attract good players.

I did But i'm happy to say he's proved me wrong again. Now I hope he plays 4-4-2 with Beattie and Kitson up front

Players are motivated by one thing......money. Notice how now there's more money in the pot he's better at attracting them. Totally agree Joe, however, even with money and premiership status there has always been a doubt in my mind that he could attract QUALITY players to the club. We only have to look at how he's played Kitson so far to see why I hold that view. Now, if the signing of Etherington, Beattie and another footballer - not just a hoofing defender - can bring about a change in tactic, I'll be delighted and will praise him as willingly and openly as I condemn his negativity. I really thought he had it sorted during the early season. he learned from his mistakes at Bolton and we looked like a team hard to beat and with the glimmer of a Plan B. Then the Wenger Whinge seemed to take the wind out of his sails. Now, given the two games against Man U and Liverpool, where he played to the strengths of the squad and we looked as we did early season again, plus two exciting signings, (at least as far as I'm concerned), with maybe a third to arrive shortly, I'm more optomistic. That doesn't mean I'm convinced yet. He still had to address the 8-1-1 formation and use the players in their best positions to allow my optomism to flow wild. We have a stronger squad, no doubt attracted in part by the better pay; whether we have a better TEAM is totally dependant upon the tactic(s) he uses.

Come on, let's not twist facts to suit an agenda. Pulis has always attracted players to the club, he is a bit of a wheeler-dealer, but in the past he has been guilty of setting his sights a bit too high. It seems that we are now looking at realistic targets combined with the fact that we are showing that there is a chance we can still be in this league next season.
As for a new player stating that they signed because of the manager - what else is he going to say? Every time a new player signs for a club, you can guarantee that there will be a handful of cliches from the "things to say in your first interview at a new club" handbook. So dont read too much into it...
And with all greatest respect, Beattie was playing a league below for a team that are unlikely to be challenging for promotion unless via the play-offs, and Etherington was clearly out of favour with the new manager at a club in crisis. We aint talking about luring Kaka away from Milan FFS!

First part of the season we scored a lot of goals (lots due to the throw) but were conceding a lot so not picking up the points. Recently it's been much more of a binary patch, mainly due to our own lack of goals but also due to excellent defending. Now we need to start scoring again without letting the defence go backwards and we'll be alright.
Having a proper left winger and our new signing beattie (if he can put about 5 away by the end of the season) should address that.
It'll be tight as though.
