Is the game up for the long throw set play which defined the first half of our season?
With Rory and "point man" Sidibe suffering with injury and opposition defences now firmly on the case I just wonder if it has any meaningful future.
Opposition fans, particularly at Man City and Man United, subjecting it to ridicule as it went increasingly pear-shaped can't have helped either.
With just 1 goal scored in our last 5 games I can't help thinking we have to come up with something else "quick-smart" as they say...?

With Lawrence,Whelan and Tonge we should be capable of some good set piece delivery. Keep the long throw back and use sparingly.

I can guarantee that the 3 players mentioned wont be on the same pitch together.

I wouldn't write it off completely as Delap has looked absolutely knackered for quite a few weeks (Injections and all) and there were actually a couple that had Van Der Saar rattled, just prior to Wilko going off and game over. We've also had a few less of the taller players in the side of late. People like Oli, Diao Kitson, and now Mama, have been replaced by lesser sizes of Cresswell, Whelan and so on. We've just not looked as intimidating in and around the box. Whether they are actually more intimidating is another thing, of course, but they do look the part.

I dont think the throw is up, since he has come back the throw has looked as good as ever, obviously better at Stoke, due to the pitch being shorter. However we are aiming at Ryan and noone else at present, look at last season and this season, we aimed at Sidibe and Cort, and fuller on back post, all are better than who we are aiming at, going forward. Ryan started last season scoring goals but dried up, and Cort became the better scorer (check last seasons D.V.D), this year Fuller has got a couple back post.
It cam come back, and is still a weapon however what is worse, is the lack of urgency up and at em, which by the way has gone missing since the much maligned on here Amdi Faye, has not played

All it takes is one "Longthrow" to come off in a game and it still works. I f***ing hate seeing those away fans taking the piss with their spazzie arms waving and would love it <\keegan> if one went right in infront of them no matter who it was (although televised would be even better!).

We're blessed with a player who can wang the ball at head-height into the heart of the penalty area and people suggest dropping it. Can someone tell me what the difference is between Rory's throw and a corner? Should we stop taking long corners too? Maybe we'd prefer to tap it short every time and try and play our way in from there? In fact, why not forget corners, let's play for a throw-in so that we can drop it onto the touchline every time. FFS it's a set piece. Sometimes it will work, other times not. But one thing's for certain, it's better to have it than not.

Its been up for a few weeks now unfortunately.. I am not sure it has more to do with the injury tho, as stated previously Arsenal was the last game it worked immensly. The rest of the time ridicule!!!

I posted a few weeks ago that coaching manuals have now started to coach "how to defend the long throw" I have a copy as my lads team comes up against it twice a season. Defend it right and you can nullify it, we do! Liverpool didn't even give a throw in away near to their penalty area at Anfield, will be interesting to see how they defend against it on Saturday. It's still a weapon for certain times though.

Of course it's up. We should also stop taking corners and free kicks as well. It is as much about the personnel in the box as Rory. The long throw is at its most effective when there is Cort and Mama at the near post and Fuller in the middle. When was the last time those 3 played together?

Don't think there up, to be fair to Rory, he look like he needs a well earned break though, the lads looked knackered of late...I'd like to see him rested for a couple of games, then I think we'll see the best of him again, not just his throws but his all round contribution.

the longthrow has been crap since nicks sold all them t-shirts Or the flipside of that - the longthrow's gone a bit off the boil since I invested in the pottery industry. The fickle world of sports merchandising....
