So far Great read until i got to the chapter stabbed in the back which coincidently is how i feel. Page 227 den tells the tale how he was offered the Stoke Job by Peter Coates when we the potters we at our lowest ebb. which i remember quite well. Now don't get me wrong Dennis smith is one of my all time greatest stoke players although i never had he pleasure of watching him live. I'm 33 now so never had the privilege to watch den as my first season watching the potters was back in 85/86 following the clubs relegation. anyway moving onto the book and smithy makes the comments that he never wanted to come back to stoke for fear of failure. Weather Dennis smith would have been a failure or not should not affect his decision in coming back to the potters after all we were at our lowest ebb in our history. He should have come back to stoke like any supporter would have done. Dennis talks in his book about loyalty and passion and desire to win yet he wasn't willing to help out the potters in our deepest darkest hour yet he was willing to help out another club a few years earlier. If stoke city come calling to me either to clear the pitch or operate turnstiles then i would be there. Yet Dennis turned us down. All to often us supporters have been let down most of all by our own in our hour of need. As a player Dennis smith was a legend but like the club let him down by Richie Barker Dennis let us down. Fortunately Peter Coates appointed Lou Macari so as they say the rest is history. We got back to at least our rightful place towards top flight football but with out Smithy. Although Smithy saids he never contemplated failure as he was full of confidence he obviously did in my opinion. As a personal message to Dennis. i love players like you and hope we have 11 players like you every Saturday. You were a top top player and will go down as a true stoke city football player legend.

He did what Shearer is doing at Castle imo, thats making sure he keeps his status as a hero in the eyes of the fans.
Many Stokies see Alan Ball as a wank manager but forget about his exploits in 66.

I'm personally glad he never managed us as it would have tarnished his reputation in the same way Kamaras has been ruined, even though I thought he was a fantastic player for us yet now hes seen as a joke figure by fans who didn't see him play.
