From www.whydelilah.co.uk/news/Stoke-homing-in-on-s48110341.aspx15/01/2008 - Stoke homing in on shawcross signing Stoke City are homing in fast on the signing of defender Ryan Shawcross from Manchester United for more than £1m, it was confirmed today. And City will have beaten off competition from a handful of other clubs interested in snapping up the 20-year-old centre-half in the January transfer window. Stoke have been in talks with both United and Shawcross over the past three weeks to hammer out a long-term deal for the highly-rated youngster. And today, Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes revealed: "Ryan's performances have made him a player in high demand. Not surprisingly, therefore, we are in competition for a number of other clubs for his signing. "However, we are in an advanced stage of negotiations and remain hopeful we will be able to conclude a deal in the near future." Shawcross has missed just one game, through suspension, since joining City on loan from United at the start of the season - and provided the added bonus of seven goals. He recently said he was happy to remain at Stoke to fulfil his long-term ambition of playing in the top flight. His signature would tie up the centre of Stoke's defence long term following yesterday's revelation that Leon Cort has joined from Crystal Palace for a club record £1.2m.

Why has it take 3 weeks to negitgiate with a player who is already at the club???????
Is it just me who thinks this is not good enough? Being as how we appear to be unable to do two deals at once, they'd better sort it rapid or there will be no chance of further re-inforcements.

Read the article. Stoke have been fighting off a number of other clubs for his signature. His agent has probably been meeting other clubs and bench-marking the Stoke offer. To all intent and purposes Ryan is a "free-agent" so can, essentially, take his time.
The only deal we have done is getting SAF and MUFC to extend the loan. We've shown initative by trying to turn that into a permanent move.
Other complications include the Ben Foster deal and I imagine David Gill and Scholes have been trying to sort a deal that suits both clubs. Not just Stoke.
You can actually understand why this one has dragged a bit.
Its frustrating for sure, but you cant lay the blame at Stoke. Just yet. Should he sign for Derby tomorrow I will of course expect blood .....

Yes- I appreciate that, but it appears (maybe wrongly) that we are unlikely to make further additions to the squad before this particular deal is sorted.
If we don't get a shimmy on, the next comments will be "all the good players are committed to deals now, we will have to explore the loan market once the window re-opens."
We do not have the depth at the moment to mount a serious promotion push, and the Shawcross signing, whilst vital, still only maintains the status quo. We need to strengthen across the board if we are serious about giving it a decent go.

MrMagic. Nail on head. We need three more on top of the imminent signatures of Pugh and hopefully Shawcross. Bizarrely, I think even TP and PC know this and for once I forsee a transfer window that we will be contented with.
It will be a long month, much nail biting will be done, but I can see us with Pugh & Shawcross boxed off, one more permanent signing and two decent loans.
I fucking hope so !

The news broke on the 3/1/08 but all the articles said he would not officially sign until the 15th, ie today.
It was widely debated on here.
STOKE City will fork out £500,000 for Danny Pugh, it was revealed today.
Pugh's move from Preston North End will be officially sanctioned on January 15.
But Stoke's chief executive Tony Scholes today confirmed the size of the fee agreed with Preston when Pugh joined City in early November.
The original deal was initially on loan so as to allow Stoke to take delivery of the 25-year-old outside the January transfer window.
Pugh has largely impressed in his 13 games to date after starting off on the left of midfield before switching to left-back for City's next nine outings via one appearance in central midfield.
"His versatility has been a big bonus to the side and helped give us some balance down the left-hand side," said Stoke manager Tony Pulis.
"I have been very pleased with how quickly he's settled in, both on and off the field, to play a part in our 10-match unbeaten run."

Fair play Dave, I just took it as a given that the signing had gone through. Let's just hope Shawcross goes through as smoothly.

The Pugh signing has been officially rubber-stamped today on the PNE off site. Pugh Deal Complete Posted on: Tue 15 Jan 2008 Danny Pugh has completed his £500,000 switch to Stoke City after his initial loan deal ended. The 25-year-old midfielder moved to the Britannia Stadium on loan at the start of November with a view to making the move permanent in the January transfer window. Pugh made eight appearances for the Lilywhites at the start of the 2007/08 campaign but has since gone on to make sixteen appearances for the Potters and he is expected to play his first game as a fully-fledged Stoke player in this weekend's Championship clash at home to PNE. Pugh was Paul Simpson's first signing for PNE when he took the former Manchester United man from Leeds United in the summer of 2006, the midfielder made 50 league starts for the Lilywhites, scoring four goals before Simpson allowed Pugh to join Tony Pulis' outfit. Speaking about the deal Chairman Derek Shaw said: "This was a transfer that was agreed by Paul Simpson and it was always the case that once Danny's loan period was up then the deal would be made permanent. In total we will receive £500,000 for Danny but a percentage of that will go to Leeds United." Pugh's No.4 jersey has now been filled by last week's North End signing, Richard Chaplow. North End come up against Stoke this weekend in what will be something of an old boys reunion, the Potters currently have Ricardo Fuller, Richard Cresswell and Marlon Broomes joining Danny Pugh in their squad. PNE of course have former Potter, Lewis Neal, in their ranks. Alan Irvine will be hopeful of a large following of fans making the short journey down the M6 for this crucial Championship clash, fans can take advantage of cheaper ticket prices by buying their ticket before matchday and also registering it on their MyPNE account towards the 10 away games for Blackpool
