Unfortunately Bobby has come out in the press and has acknowledged that the cancer has beaten him this time. It doesn't look too good for him! An absolute gentleman and legend! Not a bad word to say about him!

I was also shocked to see how ill the old fella looked, hope his remaining time is relatively peaceful.
Bobby always seemed to me to be a very decent football man and without wishing any offence, this thread does confirm how much we love a noble failure in this country. Italia 90 was a great, if slightly lucky time, but let's not forget the abject failure that was Euro 88. Nowadays, managers wouldn't survive that.
Comparing Robson to Sven is nonsense. Sven's record is far superior. Check the overall win percentage and performance at major tournament finals.

Sir Bobby is a true gent of which there are not many any more. He seems to be losing this battle but my thoughts are with him and his family and im sure he will continue fighting as he has done many times in the past. Good luck!

So what took Durham so long? He's 75 and has what looks like terminal cancer. FFS they could have honoured him at any point in his illustrious career. If he'd been a Stoke lad, I'd like to think that SoT city council would have done the decent thing about fifteen years ago!

A bit of a deserved football legend, amongst football supporters. Good luck, Bobby!

His Ipswich side was pretty special. It must still rankle with Bobby that they never quite clinchjed the league. The mistake they made was that in 1981 after winning at Villa they thought they had won the league and forgot to finish the job off.
That win at Villa Park was impressive. They had been beaten there in the FA Cup semi three days before. That took some character to bounce back.

Joe, It just goes to show what a closed shop the Premier league has become. Can you imagine the England captain playing for anyone other than the "big 4" now days? Sir Bobby created a great side at Ipswich Mick Mills, Alan Brazil Paul Marriner, John Walk and Russel osman to name a few.

I could manage one of those "big Swedish sides" and win everything becaue there is maybe three teams at most that can compete! I'm sure Sven has a better record than Brian Clough, who would you prefer as manager though? Maybe I've had a few too many

Sven's England record was very good. When he left it was clearly time to go but overall he did very well.
Anyway, yes Robson's Ipswich side was fantastic. They won the European team of the year award from Europe's journos in 1981.

Amazing what he's been through in football. The scale of nastiness towards him when he managed England makes McClarens criticism look tame. I remember an early Oatcake fanzine (circa 1988) absolutely crucifying Bobby Robson....anybody else remember it? Also the stupid, ignorant, thick as pigshit Geordies gave him the boot because they were only 5th in the Prem...Christ and they've ended up with that clown Kinnear. How the mighty have fallen. Bobby Robson and Terry Venables have been the only two decent England managers that I have known in my lifetime.

The Oatcake might well have slagged him off but everyone slagged him off at some stage. He only became a figure of affection after we beat Belgium.
More shocking is that the Oatcake is 20 years old!

Very suprised at how frail Bobby looked and can only wish him all the very best in his continued fight against his illness

I remember an early Oatcake fanzine (circa 1988) absolutely crucifying Bobby Robson....anybody else remember it? It was in Issue 3 or 4 and criticised Bobby Robson's (then) six year reign in which he'd achieved not very much. It hardly crucified him. In fact we did say that the tabloid character assassination of him at the time was unwarranted.
