What's the point in getting the "freedom" of the city if you have to pledge "obedience to the mayor and his officers and ministers" ???
Gotta love Bobby Robson though, a true gentleman and football great.

He looked very frail on the TV at the weekend. A great manager, congratulations to him.

He admitted a few months ago he knew the end was near. Hopefully his final weeks are as comfortable as possible.
Good luck Bobby.

Strange to think the press were on their coach on the way to a WC quarter final and taking the piss out of him.

Me stepdad (who i knew all my life) died from cancer at the age of 42 in 2001 and now a very close friend has cancer and has been told his chemotherapy was unsuccesful.
a very nasty disease to say the least...
I really hope Sir Bobby pulls through or at the very least is remembered for being such a true legend and a real gentleman of the sport we all adore.

Amazing what he's been through in football. The scale of nastiness towards him when he managed England makes McClarens criticism look tame.

Totally agree Joe, Even up to the knockout stages of Italia 90 he was copping a right load of flack. Unfortunately most people only see a good thing once it's past them by.

The FA stabbing him in the back over his departure was truly despicable. I wonder if any of the silly old duffers have the decency to feel ashamed.

Got a shock when i saw this clip. So sad to see how fast one can decline at that age. His little victory dances at italia 90 and strong down-to-earth views on football will never be forgotton. Class bloke.

You cant believe the way Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby were treated by the FA, totally despicable and then they pay that useless Swedish cunt millions of pounds even though he made the FA look a laughing stock. There's no justice in this world

the 66 lads are treated like an ABSOLUTE disgrace by our FA. The England Germany friendly a few weeks back, each one (player that is) received a letter from the German FA, saying that they would be delighted to have the whole squad (obviously the ones who are still with us) as guests of honour. However the FA decided that they couldn't afford to send them all over on a plane, so declined the invitation for them.
I mean, come on.
but on the subject of sir bobby, i had the pleasure of meeting him once. a thoroughly nice gentleman. lets hope he has a comfortable and happy end to what remains of his time with us.

I've nothing but respect for Bobby. Those idiots at NUFC need to get on with renaming that stand in his name before he passes.

Very sad. Absolute legend, proven at every level and truly humble with it- one of football's really genuine nice guys. Hope the NUFC board, whining fans and FA stuffed shirts/scumbag hacks who engineered his two departures are ashamed of themselves. Although unlikely. Things got so much better after he left England and Newcastle didn't they?

Bobby was unlucky to be England manager when football was unpopular and during a tabloid war.
He made it clear he wanted to carry on after the 1990 World Cup but the FA quietly told him his contract wouldn't be renewed. Bobby, as he's entitled to, got the job at PSV to begin after the World Cup. The FA twats made that public and implied he'd left the job of his own accord and had ben a bit of a traitor in doing so.
Bobby Robson admitted himself it takes at least two years to come to terms with what the job entails. Adapting to the huge scale of the job takes a long time and can be a lonely process. The FA decided his eight years of experience meant nothing and got a new bloke in who had to go through that process all over again. Bobby's eight years meant nothing.
