With the talk of Gudjon being linked with the Crewe job, it got me thinking of his time in charge and how I really quite enjoyed that period. Seem to remember there were a fair few good away days (pre ID cards)
Anyone remember what was I think his first game in charge, away at Wycombe on a Tuesday night? 4.0 victory and a cracking night. Everyone beforehand had wondered what the new regime would be like, but afterwards everybody thought were on the up. Think it was a guy called Danielsson who scored a brilliant goal that night (our second?) Anyhow, just got me thinking...

I wrote Gudjon a personal letter thanking him for his efforts after we gained promotion, he sent me a letter back acknowledging my letter and put in a signed photo of himself! Top man is Gudjon

Great manager, brought some excellent players too the club, on a strict budget, and was very harshly sacked, if he hadn't have took us up that year, you've got too wonder whether we'd be where we are today.

Yes, Danielsson scored a superb solo goal that night but soon after went off injured (shoulder?). There were some good times under Gudjon- not least that night in Cardiff

It was the best of times and the worst of times.
After the takeover, it was exciting to finally see the club moving in the right direction after a couple of very traumatic seasons indeed. Gudjon was a witty, likeable guy and there were some good times, from the Wembley win, to exciting games against the likes of Gillingham, Brentford and Millwall (those were the days) and of course, the unforgettable games at Ninian Park and the Milennium stadium. It was the era of Thorney, Super James O' Connor, Hoekstra and Staniuk.
However, Gudjon was a stubborn sod, and in a lot of ways was far more cautious and negative at times than Pulis. He had a shocking aversion to 4-4-2 even when it was obvious that his beloved 5-3-2 thingy wasn't working, even at home against the might of Cambridge United and Swansea. The 2000-01 season, when we were expecting to stroll it and and totally ballsed it up, was a nightmare, and his set up going into that crucial Walsall play off game, with Thorne on the bench and O'Connor at right back, was unfathomable. It was the era of embarrassing capitulations to Vale, 0-8 humiliations to Liverpool, and Dadason, Risom and Dorigo.
Still, Gudjon should have had the chance to see what he could do after promotion, and on the whole it's an era I remember fondly.

Gudjon could be quite negative. In the FA Cup tie at home to Everton I thought we had a great chance to have a real go at them that day as I seem to remember they were saying Walter Smith was one game away from the chop! But we were really negative that day and lost it without ever putting them under any real pressure.
There were frustrating away days too. Games like Colchester away spring to mind when Gavin Ward ended up pushing over one of our defenders - whose name escapes me! But still over all i thought it was an ok era with a much better feeling around the place than the couple of seasons before it. Thought he was a pretty genuine guy who took the club to heart as well.

For sure, if he gets the Crewe job they will be working hard and doing ever so well. I miss those 'Gudjon-isms'.

I remember that Wycombe game very well, what a great night it was thinking back. Some great memories infact thinking back, one of my favourite away games under the great man was Bristol Rovers 3-3 match, remember those yellow socks we wore!! The year after to was great at Bristol winning 3-0, thanks to a Thorne hattrick again.

'Mr G' as he was known was a very decent chap, who did very well for this football club.
Right up there with: Pulis and Macari in the popularity stakes over recent years!
Would love him to manage Crewe, he never deserved to get the boot!

"Gudjon, tell us something about yourself" " I used to be a woman" I really hope he does get the Crewe job, if only for the after match interviews. A real character.

robvandeurzen83, I feel a bit silly now and I can't delete it as you've copy and pasted. I've been sitting here thinking how great it was and all the interviews running through my head. Thanks for pointing that little mistake out to me.

Unfortunately, his relationship with Gislason became completey unworkable, with Gudjon point blank refusing to speak to him for a number of weeks, hence, he had to go.

Top Man was Gudjon. I think he loved it at Stoke and had great respect for the people in the City.
Looks like Crewe are going for Steve Davis, the owd Burnley player who is currently at ......Nantwich.
Nothing against the bloke but they dont spend money do they Crewe??????
I couldnt see Mr G putting up with Gradi and the archaic ways that they operate at Crewe.
If he did go their though Id go and watch a few games. Not been since Bangoura played there..and the rest is history.
