Hi there, I'm planning on buying a flat screen TV – any help or advice anyone can provide will be much appreciated! I’m expecting it to be used for watching Sky, playing on the X-box and then we’ll probably get Sky HD. I want to spend about £500-600. Makes I’m looking at are Panasonic, Samsung, Sony or LG. Should I be looking at Hitachi, Philips or Toshiba also? Size: 37” to 40” Resolution must be 1920 x 1080. Or is it best to get a slighter lower res, eg 1024x768 and get a 100Hz refresh? I’m assuming it’s best to get 1080p? Is LCD or Plasma best? Should I be looking to get a 100Hz (our current CRT Panasonic is 100Hz). Is it worth the extra? Can you only get 100Hz for Plasma Best place to get online?
Many thanks!

samsung at comet or currys are the best, wait a couple of weeks and they'll come down in price even more, online on either and save even more..

I have recently had to replace my TV due to an accident. When the guy from Comet came to assess the damage for the insurance claim he told me that the makes to go for were Samsung, Panasonic and Toshiba, and to avoid Sony and Philips. The reason for avoiding those makes, apparently, is that the freeview hardware requires updates occasionally and the Sony and Philips don't handle the updates well, and you are likely to switch your TV on and find you've got no sound or something!
If you are planning to upgrade to Sky HD or are using an X-Box then definitely go for a 1080p HD TV (the one I ended up with is the Toshiba 32" 1080p HD LCD).
As for the rest, go for the highest contrast you can, fastest refresh rate (8ms or faster), plenty of scart and HDMI connections.
I've not noticed any problems with the 60Hz scan rate on my TV, so that's up to you really.
Personally I prefer LCD to plasma, but this is personal choice. I actually know of people who prefer CRT to LCD or plasma! I assume these same people also listen to cassettes, vinyl and AM radio by preference!! ;D

Wait till after Christmas and go for a Panasconic free-sat TV. A young man in Currys in told one just the other day that at least 200 pounds will be knocked off some models.

Definately go for a 1080p set. The Sky HD box outputs at 1080i and you can then set your TV to its 1:1 pixel mapping mode so there's no overscaning going on giving a sharper picture.
I bought a second Samsung 40" 1080p set a couple of months ago (an addition, not a replacement with my original one going upstairs for the PS3). Personally, I think they're fantastic.
Have a look at the Samsung 5 Series. Don't let the four different versions confuse you. You've got the 556, 557, 558 and 559 models. They're the same TV just with cosmetic differences.
If you want 100hz then the Samsung 6 series can be had for not much more than your budget if you shop around a bit online.

Black and white are just as good if your're colour blind and don't like snooker.
