As our away performances seems to suggest we will be lucky to win more than a couple of games away from the Brit, I was wondering if our sensational form at home will be enough to see us safe. Unless we start improving and increasing our points tally away we will have to look at maintaining our home form which suggests we need say 13 wins at the Brit. Worryingly looking back over the last 8 years in the Prem only ONE team outside of the top 6 has won 13 home games in fact most midtable lower table sides struggle to win 10. WHich team managed 13.....surprisingly it was Fulham in 2005/6 who won 13 and drew 2. Coincidentally their away form that season was shocking and similar to ours, winning just 1 and drawing 4 having the worst away record. Still they managed 48 points and comfortably stayed up. Many seem to think that our home form willsee us ok...but as the stats show its a huge ask..........crank up the volume at the brit boys!

Didn't Sunderland only win away once last season?

Think they won 2 and ended up with 39 points....somehow I think we will need a bit more than 39 this season

Top post, very interesting was thinking of starting a post on the same lines myself but you have done it for me and far better than I would have done, to answer your question yes I think it probably can keep us up, we have played 6 at home and won 4 a bit of simple maths and that = us winning 12.6666667 out of the 19 at home, so say 12 wins from our home games a few more more backs to the wall negative 0-0 bore draws should get us close to the magical 40 points mark so thinking about your question again its goin to be mighty fooking tight !

I can't see us picking up much away from home if we carry-on playing the same system so home form is absolutely crucial...what worries me is if Rory gets injured later on in the season...because without him we would have about 7 points now..

I think we will be ok if we keep moving forward with our home form. It wil be very difficult to get those elusive away wins...... although West Brom should hopefully give us our first away win lol

It was an amazing home record for Fulham...was it their 2nd season in the prem...so theres hope. Its a worring stat that ONLY Fulham outside of the top 6 have had such a good home record. It suggests it dont happen very often

Its a big ask, we have done well in the games against the big sides at home, the next three are all ones that we should expect to win, I think our season will be shaped by the next five games, win at least two home games and nick something at blackburn and Newcastle and we will go into the transfer window in a great position.
My worry is that when we get a couple of home defeats if we contunue to be so poor away we will be back in the bottom three, we need to be more positive at newcastle and blackburn

Dave...not sure what your point is, all the examples dont compare to the 13 wins by fulham at home in the deason I quoted. My point is that if our away form continues we will need 12/13 home wins to be safe....8/9 or even 10 is unlikely to be enough.

My point is Survival is possible with a thourghly wank away form, look at the coventry example , NO AWAY WINS in a season and they stayed up . I'd rather we didn't go down that route and got 3-4 away wins, with a decent home record , and be safe with a few games to go .
