I feel really good about how this is looking However.. forgive my cynical side when i say wait out until the dotted line is signed and he is really ours. Shawcross is a fantastic talent and slowly but surely my doubts are being eased away....... I'm still rubbing my eyes in disbelief and am just waiting for it to all go wrong... or someone else to step in with a bigger offer!!!!

My Dad has just text saying Radio Stoke confirmed the permanent signing of Shawcross this morning...
Has no one else heard this?

"I don't want to go into the details of the deal just yet. They [Man Utd] have got some safeguards," Coates told BBC Radio Stoke.
"All being well the deal will be completed and both parties will feel they have done ok."

For me this will be one of the most important signings for a while. Shawcross is someone that will be useful for years to come. He has Premiership potential but even if he doesn't reach that level, he will be a top Championship defender throughout his career I should think! Lets hope it goes through

Ive said for a while that it would be great to sign him permanent but never really thought we would. Cracking signing if confirmed and shows the kind of ambition we have been wanting for a long time. Well done PC.

If Shawcross signs permanently we've got ourselves a damn good player with good potential. If there's a hitch in the Cort deal I'd be tempted to call it off and then keep Hill around for a while to marshall the defence while all the time looking for a Gerry or Sergei to lead.

I thought Sir Alex looked a bit puzzled at half time, after the ballet dancing; so well done Ryan, that obviously convinced him!
£1.5m plus 25% - Or nothing, and thanks very much for Foster. (and the latter seems unlikely if Utd have "safeguards".
Still, a cracking signing if it does happen, but £1.5 of the war chest down the swanny for a player we had until the end of the season anyway. Which might make the "cheap striker" bid (Stelios) even more plausible ... However, paying for Ryan and paying Derby anything for Griffin does sound a bit daft ... Any more news on our favourite Derby-Lad?
On BBC on Sunday, there was a quick flash of Sir Denis, nodding one in at the far post (in the Sir Stan piece). Frightening resemblence ... take yer back dunner it?

There were bound to be strings attached I guess but this is brilliant news, a couple of months ago I didn't believe we'd have a snowball's of keeping hold of Ryan. This really does prove we're a healthy club at long last, and one that's genuinely moving forward.

Andy, maybe its forward thinking by Stoke cos without a doubt shawcross would be chased by most clubs in the championship and possibly in the premiership by the time he came out of contract, the lad is a class act who has true potential. Very very well played PC/TP.

If this deal comes through it really is the first time that PC & TP have put the ball in the fans half for a long LONG time.
It’s now down to the people of the city who are staying away to come and back the club. It’s down to at all those people who managed to find money for the Newcastle game to come for some of the league games and help fund what could actually be a promotion season.

4PM UPDATE: CHANGE COULD BE AS GOOD AS A REST FOR CITY TARGET Be the first reader to comment on this story
15:57 - 08 January 2008
Stoke star Ryan Shawcross admits he is getting tired by the half-way stage of his first full season in senior football - but only after matches. The 20 year-old defender, who could be a fully fledged Stoke player by the end of the week if negotiations with Manchester United progress on course, confesses it's been a long campaign after missing just one match through suspension since joining on loan in August.
"It's been a long season for me because at Antwerp we got to the end-of-season play-offs and so I only got two weeks off over the summer.
"I'm starting to feel tired. Not in matches, but after them. But with the right rest and recuperation, I'm fine. I don't have much problem sleeping and I love my afternoon naps.
"You can't go out partying between matches, but that's not too bad because I've grown up at United where they put it into you from a young age that you have to look after your body."
Shawcross is refusing to talk about a potential permanent move to the Britannia Stadium.
However, club chairman Peter Coates confirmed that Stoke are in discussions with United about signing the young centre-half.
"We are hopeful we can do it ... you have to be in this game," said Coates.
Meanwhile, Andy Griffin is inching closer to putting pen to paper after further discussions with Stoke's hierarchy over his move from Premiership stragglers Derby County.
* STOKE'S reserve game at home to Port Vale a week tomorrow has been postponed because of City's FA Cup replay at Newcastle.
Their fixture at home to Oldham's second string goes ahead as planned tomorrow afternoon (2pm) at Newcastle Town.
Stoke are expected to release details shortly of ticket arrangements for fans travelling to St James' Park next week.

Great news. I just hope that the fee doesnt eat too much into further investment, such as midfield and maybe a striker. Id prefer to see him signed at the end of the season and spend the immediate money on midfield. All in all though, fantastic news ;D ;D ;D

AndyHar £1.5 of the war chest down the swanny for a player we had until the end of the season anyway. ??? However, paying for Ryan and paying Derby anything for Griffin does sound a bit daft ???I think 1.5 mill for a player of his age and potential, that definately secures his signature, rather than wait til the end of season and risk losing him is superb business. If we'd lost him at the end of the season, it'd be :- "should of fukin signed him while we had the chance". If we do get to the prem, this signing could save us an awfull lot more. The war chest maybe bigger than we think?

If there's a hitch in the Cort deal I'd be tempted to call it off and then keep Hill around for a while to marshall the defence while all the time looking for a Gerry or Sergei to lead. I agree 100% with this. We need someone capable of orchestrating the defence alongside Ryan. Cort is not this man, though his goals are useful and invaluable in fairness to him. Still, a Gerry, Higgy or Shtaniuk type figure would help us defensively, as, in fairness, we've been conceding too easily of late.

I think this could be a great deal for Stoke, obviously signing Ryan is fantastic news but from what the Sentinel hints at he could come for next to nothing by wiping off the Ben Foster add-ons. This would be an amazing deal given Foster's injuries, who knows what the future holds? We could end up not recieving a penny more from that deal. I say cash in our credit at United and get a potentially top class player for next to bugger all.

This would be absolutely fantastic news!
Doesn't it seem slightly odd though that Coates "revealed" this news before the deal has been signed, sealed and delivered. It seems in recent times Stoke have gone out of their way not to make any announcements until the deal is fully "complete". This is obviously due to some high profile and embarrasing last minute let downs.
I suppose he must be very confident but still it just seems like a U-turn on policy.
