For you when does Super Tony out do The Great Tony as our best manager because we are looking at a possible promotion followed by survival in the PL plus a possible quater maybe semis in the league cup.

If we stay up a few years I'll think about it. A cup run or two would help.
Remember the last manager who got us into the top flight and stabilised us wasn't appreciated at the time. I know we were sort of considered a top flight club back then but the achievement was overlooked.

I suppose a place in the UEFA Cup would probably take him pretty close to Waddo's acheivements as you could say we had been re-established as a top club. But you have to remember that Waddo lasted 17 years at the club and that is an achievement it itself.

He won't. Simple as. And that's not knocking Pulis. I can't ever see a manager achieving for Stoke what Waddo did. That doesn't mean the rest are rubbish. It just means they're not as good.

cant compare really, completely different eras. Under waddo we had a spell as one of the top teams. Thats never going to happen now with all these millions getting thrown around.

I'll tell you what. If Pulis wins us the League Cup, gets us a run in Europe and keeps us up in the Prem for over 5 years I'll gladly say in public to anyone that he is as good as Waddington. At the moment he is nearly as good as Durban.

When:
We are an established top division side and have been top of that league.
We qualify for Europe in successive seasons.
We win a trophy
We attract and retain top players
We have gates of 50,000 ;D
So next year then!

As well as many years in the top flight and euro qualification TP also has to assemble a side as good as the one in the 70's.......find me a Greenhoff, Hudson Ritchie etc and Tone will be getting close.

hmm, I dont think that we can really ever have a winner in this debate, as football has changed so much since Waddo's day, the entire structure of the game has changed from topto bottom and has been made deliberately difficult by the big teams to be challenged by the little ones. It cuts both ways though and Leeds are probably the best example of a big club going down the tubes. Im sure that they will bounce back mores the pity. I think the best Stoke could do in the present climate is to aim for mid-table stability with the outside chance of a UEFA place and an FA cup run. I really cannot see us ever being in a position to aim any higher than that and that level of achievement would be incredible no matter who was the manager.
