I'd like to get my hands on some good black and white photos of Stoke. I'm going to do a search of the internet but if anyone has links to some good sites I'd appreciate it.

I know it wouldn't have been healthy to live in, or with what we're used to these days especially pleasant but I wouldn't half mind having been able see what stoke was like during these times. Would have been interesting if nothing else.

It was interesting. Maybe not healthy but the upside was that most folk had a wicked sense of humour. They had to, to live amongst that muck. Now, perhaps, some of the posters on here might understand where I'm coming from most of the time and stop taking me too seriously. Some of the time. Some great pics and some great links. I'd almost forgotten what it looked and smelled like. OS.

Blimey. I didn't know Meir had ever even had its own council.

Dave's ok. I've met him many times. Messageboard personna can be misleading. Anyway, leave 'The Legend' alone. You bully. Here's another one of PhilR and Gunnar doing the rounds. Those were the days when Stoke were skint and didn't have 8.5 million to throw away. OS.

We did, Joe. It was mainly to deal with security to stop the Cheadle Cowboys coming into our territory. They used to give The Meir a miss. They were wise Cheadle Cowboys. I'll 'photoshop' it one day, mumf just to give you and Victor some ammo. You're beginning to need it. OS.

I've seen some of the pictures of stoke from years ago (ranging from the 1890's to 1970's) at high school (history department at mitchell high) and compared to then stoke does look like its had more or less all its character stripped from it as a city, the smog doesn't look too nice in some of the pictures, but from an eye catching point of view, they look better than the generic city we have now lol, wouldn't be that bad if councils didnt now all use pretty much the exact same design during the same years to get things done.

Showed a fella at work and he was gobsmacked. Couldn't believe that people lived through such pollution. Does make you wonder.................I suppose the rates of skin cancer were lower if nothing else.
All I need now are some classic old ones of the Vic

I hadn't realised until I looked at those photographs just how much I miss the smog. We get plenty of mist and fog these days but who can forget those wonderful "pea soupers" in the winter which lasted for days (and probably sent our grand parents to an early grave)
Remember those games at the Vic where you only got to hear who had scored at the far end of the ground when the announcer told you - and he had to wait until one of the players passed word to the coaching staff on the touchline! ;D

The women were strong in those days. Just look at the woman waiting to get on the bus. Is that a sack of coal or potatoes?
