The Corkscrew will run for the final time on Sunday, November 9 at a special event as Alton Towers retire the ride after 28 years.(the official public date of closure is 2nd November) I loved the Corkscrew. As a kid it was always the 1st ride we'd race to on a day out at Towers. It was such a great, iconic rollercoaster. Agreed its had its day with the likes of Air,Nemesis and Oblivion. I for one will truly miss it Here's some interesting info abouty the Cotkscrew : Over its 28 year history, the Corkscrew site alone has yielded 800 pieces of jewellery, 53 shoes (none matching), 604 watches, 237 mobile phones, 10 items of underwear, thousands of caps, a prosthetic ear and more recently, a prosthetic leg.

Not one to blow my own trumpet but me and 6 schoolmates (at the time) hold the record for the most times on the corkscrew in a day.
148 times without getting off, from 9 til 5.30.
It was for some sort of charity the school did. We even had our dinner on there, and then we were photographed by the Sentinel, and it appeared on the front page the next day.
Sorry to see it go, but its very lame now compared with newer rides.
RIP.

10 items of underwear?! Jesus Christ. I'll be sad to see the Corkscrew go, was it on 'You Bet' that them Scouts had to eat a Sunday dinner whilst riding on it?
Remember the Thunder Looper?

It means that the copy of the official training manual I have should be worth a few quid in a couple of years then Brake testing in the mornings and the birds eye views down cleavages were a couple of the perks of working on it in my time as a Towers Employee....... mmmmmmm boobies

Haven't been to Alton Towers since they culled the farm yard animals back during the foot and mouth epidemic. Have some of that for a moral conquest! The bunch of wankers....

yea, it wasnt so much of a ride as i think someone at alton towers deciding if you were daft enough to pay the entry fees you'd be daft enough to sit there for a few minutes of abuse then pay for a picture of it lol

Well I know a lad who works at towers and according to the guys there the ride is going because it just isn't safe anymore. Harnesses have been coming up on people.
He says that it will be back in 2 years after changes are made and its re vamped under a different name.

if thats the case, you have to hope they dont let oblivion get that way before they shut it down, could you imagine being hanging over the edge then the harness coming up, theres always that nervous thought in my mind when i go on it, even though I know its near on impossible lol.

Always shit myself going on it but that was part of the fun! The beauty of it was that there was never a queue (because there were more exciting rides). Good times

Legendary, If I ever wanted the head rattling experience similar to 2minutes with Tyson I knew where to go. Classic ride, bit too old for the game now

I've never been on it, always tried to avoid it because I've been too scared from stories about how painful it is.

Me and the Mrs, in the younger days would bob a day off work back in the early 80s, and go Alton Towers on a Monday purely for the Corkscrew..Like you say it is a bit dated, but nevertheless its still worth a go.. Someone mentioned The Thunderlooper, that like a couple of the other Towers rides were pulled down due to contant break downs,,another was the mad mouse [never went on it..cant see it beating Blackpool's... anyone remember THE FUNHOUSE at Alton Towers, back in the 70s?

Corkscrew was great and yet out of all the rides ive ever been on it was the one i felt more nervous about before hand for some reason. I was bricking it in the queue! God knows why!
Now the Black Hole was shite and after being on that it felt like you needed a neck brace.
I've not been Alton Towers for about 5 years but for me you'll never beat Nemesis. Superb!

I nearly went on Nemesis but I got to the ride, sat down and got off again. I just couldn't bring myself to do it that day. Oblivion was good though.
