Sam Speaks: Stoke Tie Will Relieve Pressure
SAM Allardyce is welcoming Sunday's forthcoming FA Cup third round away clash with Stoke City as a relief of the pressure of the Premier League.
After a third successive league defeat, Big Sam turned his attention to the live-on-TV Cup-tie and declared: "The FA Cup relieves the pressure of the Premier League simply because it's not the same competition.
"It's a straight knock-out so you've got one chance and we want to make sure we take it an don't miss the opportunity.
"Getting into the next round will be a confidence-booster and we can then turn our Premier League performances into results.
"Stoke will fancy it - they will think we are there for the taking. I'm not daft enough not to realise I'm in the results business. I need to win some football matches - that's clear.
"But I look at the performances and take encouragement from today and from Chelsea.
"But we need a bit more luck, and we have to be more ruthless in front of goal, for we are creating opportunities to score."
Big Sam admitted he "didn't expect this run to happen" given United's good form earlier in the season.
He said: "After the first ten games of the season, and then coming through that in the Arsenal, Birmingham and Fulham games, we felt we were just getting our teeth into what would be a very, very good Christmas.
"The real killers for us were Derby and Wigan - that's where we slipped up the most."

A draw would be an excellent result for us on balance...a defeat being the more likely outcome.Newcastle will undoubtedly fired up for this game knowing what is at stake for Big Sam.

But surely we will be just as, if not more, fired up for the game The chance of an upset, a big crowd, plus being live on the BBC would surely make our players up for it

After the loss to Citeh he says: "But we have to believe that, with the way we played against City, we will get out of this slump and we will start on Saturday against Stoke in the FA Cup."
Are they turning up a day early or have I got my dates wrong? ???

Huffing and puffing but an ultimately fruitless afternoon.

True, Mr Licker...but there is the small matter of strength and depth.
They have Michael Owen ...we have Pericard.

He'll have to be subbed after a few minutes after Ryan gives him a little kicking

Joe, without Fuller that will definitely be the case.
I think we will need to score at least 2 to get a result.
Are you able to get the game live on your TV. Are you having a few stokies over for the game??
???

I hate ESPN for this kind of flakeyness. It would almost be better to have somebody record it off the BBC and ftp it for us to watch in comfort. I could then get up at 7 am instead of 5 watch the game and still make it to work in time. Plus - no Geordies at Star City on a Monday morning.

TIMES SPORT - MONDAY 7TH JAN 08 BIG SAM, TIME TO GO. Sam Allardice was relieved of his position as Newcastle manager last night after a sensational evening of drama at the Britannia Stadium. The magpies led 2-0 at half time thanks to a brace from Micheal Owen against the general run of play, but they never bargained for the dramatic impact of half time substitute Jon Parkin. The strapping 18 stone forward grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and produced a stunning second half hat trick, his first since 1992, to stun the away following into silence. Speaking after the game Allardice said ' I never thought that fat lad would knock 3 in, I'm stunned! you are not passing the job centre on the way home are you?'

Snippet from the BBC Sport Website
"They will fancy it now won't they? They will think we are there for the taking,"
...well to be honest Sam, I've fancied us beating you since your number appeared out of the bag on 3rd round draw day!

yes they have a much better team than us admittedly, but we have that ability toscore any given set piece and that will count for something. Their defence is hardly amazing so fuller could run at them at some point and I'd expect mama to be as potent as ever in the air. I reckon we'll do it
