Never thought I would say this but Pulis seems to have lost his ability to organise a tight defence and produce binary results...its a bit ironic that when we now need clean sheet we seem light years away from achieving one. So Tone get in a qaulity defesive coach and get them organised at the back...or at least stop tinkering with the lineup...Faye in midfield was a mistake

think it's more to do with us being up against quality opposition. We have given some soft goals away but I don't believe it's anything to with TP losing his skills.

The defence was fairly poor last season as well though.

When we get a settled back 4 things will improve.
Am i right in saying we haven't had the same back 2 in consecutive games this season??

Or have you forgotten?

"Quality opposition" They were average at best in my eyes, and we were very poor at defending set pieces. It was a cracking game but, i don't think we are premiership standard. Not yet anyway, sorry.

It was strange to read that Gerry Francis' sessions were with the defence.
Pulis is supposedly very hands-on with the defenders. Strange that he may be handing over some coaching responsibility to Francis, even if it's possibly only the odd session every few weeks?
Maybe he thinks he is missing a trick?

The odd thing I have noticed is that whilst we are conceeding far too many goals from set pieces and from daft mistakes we are actually doing better than I expected in denying teams chances from open play. Having played 4 teams who are all established Premiership teams, we haven't actually been over run by any of them for any significant time during any game - other than after the first goal at Bolton. Even down to ten men against Boro we competed far better than I thought we would.
I'm sure the defensive frailities can be sorted with a bit of work by TP. If we do get our defence up to par for this league then we'll do quite well because, to my surprise, we are finding it quite easy to score ourselves.

I think the problem is players not staying alert, what he needs to tell them is when corners and free kicks are coming in always stay alert and look around you, also he needs to make sure Sorensen is barking at them to keep them alert at all times. To many time the players are switching off to often at crucial moments . It's pretty basic stuff and if we can eradicate those lapses of concentration we will finally be able to beat some of these teams, because from open play teams haven't caused us a lot of trouble up to now . Training session over, think about what I've just said, and I'll see you all same time tomorrow

It's just that Cort, Sonko, Griff and Higgy aren't doing their jobs on SET PIECES. They're all very good in training i bet! In open play our defence is FINE, it's just people switching off on set pieces(HIGGY for Cahill goal). There's nothing Tony Pulis can do about that. Fraisier , we stopped a quality Everton side from playing. They're NOT an average team, they finished 5th last year and have strengthened further - we played their best team yesterday and matched them.

'Tony Pulis is the best defensive coach in England.'
Bollocks - I would have thought that whoever holds that title can build a team based on 4 defenders and not a minimum of 6.
