A good comeback after last weeks (partly excusable) shambles with a good win at highly rated in their own minds Charlton down in South London today.
Stoke were bolstered by the inclusion of Jimmy Phillips and Marc Grocott but it was two under 16s players who set up the goals in a sound performance all round.
Layton Wint stormed forward from left back to deliver a pinpoint cross for Warwick Alexander to head home via the underside of the bar for the first goal just before half time. Jack Harrison sent in a teasing cross that the Charlton keeper could only half flap to a waiting Louis Moult who expertly half vollied it back into the roof of the net over the keeper's and retreating defenders heads from 15 yards midway through the second period.
Charlton got a consolation goal in the eighth minute of nine and a half added on by a referee from a game that hardly stopped at all. Mind you it was a ref who decided that a booking was the correct punishment to deal out to the Charlton winger (who should have been dealt with by both the ref and his own coaching staff several times before) when he ran across to lay the boot into a grounded Stoke player! We wouldn't really have expected him to tell the time accurately after all that.
A good performance.
