STOKE and Norwich are squaring up for a £1million scrap over West Ham centre-half Calum Davenport, 24.
The Potters want the 6ft 4in star to help their promotion bid, while Norwich hope he can help them beat the drop

same story in the Star as well - so it must be true!
starange one really given Shawcross is confirmed as staying. With Zakuani here as well that would make 4 decent centrehalfs & only 1 (in truth) quality centremidfielder (Diao,a bit harsh on Euastace maybe).
Perhaps TP has more money to spend than is being suggested. Perhaps TP just loves buying centrehalves. Perhaps the price isnt as high as £1m. Perhaps the story isnt true. Perhaps Zak' is to play RB & Wright isnt signing?

sorry.
perhaps aliens have taken control of Coates & TP & need as many centre halves as possible for food on their homeland.
as Homer would say 'mmmm.......soylent green'

as Loyd Grossman used to say to say on Through the Keyhole
"Lets look at the evidence"
An Irish past A career in professional sports A hammer on the mantelpiece A naval connection (port) A possible transfer to championship rivals
Now who would play for a team like this??? Lordb its over to you

With Shawcross signed till the end of the season and thinking he will be playing centre half , perhaps TP has penciled him in for left back and pushing Pugh to left midfield?? Hope not as Pugh is not the best at left mid and Shawcross has been outstanding in the middle. The logic would be that TP feels more comfortable signing a centre half that a left winger and Shawcross is not long term if we don't get up. Perhaps we are not buying Cort after all or its just a made up story from the Sun. Any other theories?

TP is gay and he likes to watch big ones in the showers after the games? He's heard that Calum has a 3rd leg so wants to find out if it's true!
beat that lordb!

You missed, from his interview at the weekend: Perhaps TP is concerned that we are conceding too many silly goals and having to score 3 times, away from home, to get a result.

wouldnt be a bad signing as long as its not our only one he could keep shawcross and cort on their toes

A million quid is a lot to spend on defensive cover though.

if we get to the last month of football in second and shawcross does his knee a million quid will look the bargain of the century so maybe we are just spending all this money the papers say we have. a million invested in each department would suit me

Davenport surely wouldn't come to sit on the Stoke bench though.
And surely our recent club record signing and Shawcross wouldn't either.
If true, it'd seem a slightly odd way to spend our January warchest, given the fact that our current 3rd choice CB, Zakuani, is so capable.

And drop who? A bloke TP will spend over £1m on next Wednesday? Or a bloke who most of the fanbase would be more than happy for us to spend £1m on? When Zak has been so able when called on, going over the £1m barrier on yet another CB seems like overkill, given the glaring deficiencies elsewhere in the squad. Not that I'm knocking all this talk of big money investment!

Perhaps this is TP starting to build to keep us in the prem. Look where we were left when all the loanees went back last season. There was nobody left to buy that was any good and in our price bracket. Just a thought like.

On the face of it, another centre half doesn't look good news when we are crying out for a bit of "quality" in the middle.
Maybe he's thinking of ridding someone, or maybe he's obsessed with CH's. I think history indicates the latter. However, the comment about building for next year is a good one, and if he thinks he can get Davenport now, avoiding a battle for a signing in the summer then I'm happy to support him.

Could our Tone be looking at playing 3 central defenders at the back with Pugh & Wilko playing down the flanks with Lawrence, Diao and Eustace in the middle with Ricci and Cresser up top?
Simmo
Wilko Cort Shawcross Davenport Pugh
Lawrence Diao Eustace
Cresswell Fuller

I think its a good move as Shawcross id just a loan player and is not ours for good. Perhaps TP is planning ahead for once.

According to this blog by Karren Brady in The Sun, Norwich are haggling over a price for Martin Taylor from Birmingham, so I can't see them being prepared to pay £1M just like that for Davenport. I've got my doubts whether even Tony Pulis would spend another £1M on a centre half after bring Leon Cort to the club. www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/sunsport_columnists/article626855.ece

Davef that was my initial thought when seeing this, though I wouldn't rule out that a few enquiries have been made about certain players at WHU.
