www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/aug/26/liverpool.premierleague Stoke City have made a joint £7m offer for Jermaine Pennant and Sami Hyypia, although the former's reluctance to move there is proving a major obstacle to that deal. Pennant is also a target for the Blackburn manager Paul Ince, although they have offered only £3.5m for the winger and Liverpool are holding out for at least £5m.

I don't like the sound of Pennant's 'reluctance to move there' to be honest. Last thing we need is a big time charlie who think's he's too big for us.

he has had a bit of a rep! The question is, is he better than what we have now, i think he only has pace that lawrence doesnt I'd rather have a left winger as i dont think we will be getting dramani

If we signed Pennant it wouldn't be the end for Lawrence - he'd play just as well on the left or as the creative central midfielder.

On the BBC sport page this morning: Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez could raise £7m through the sale of winger Jermaine Pennant and centre-back Sami Hyypia to Stoke, while Everton are also looking into Valencia's 6ft 8in Serbia international striker Nikola Zigic. (The Guardian)

People have been talking about pennant for a while i think, whether that was just wishful thinking im not sure but if i just cant see him wanting to come. in interveiws tony has talked a couple of times about 'pushing onto the next level' - or words to that effect but its unlikely that we would be looked at like that until we have survived a season.
keep having to pinch myself, this time last year i would have laughed if some one had told me we were aiming for a double swoop for this particular duo. Now were all deciding whether pennant's perceived attitude would be detrimental to the side!

Blimey - from a drought to a flood. Can't fault the cash being chucked around if it's true.
If we ever got Pennant, Kanga and Fuller in the same XI, we'd go from ponderous to rapid, as a team.
Pennant's reported "major reluctance" looks like putting the kibosh on it though?
And still no links to a proper left-footer..

It is incredible the quality of player we are being linked to. Hopefully this is the week when one of them signs (I've decided to erase Abdoulaye Faye, Dave Kitson and Seyi Olofinjana from my memory for the time being)

If we signed Pennant it wouldn't be the end for Lawrence - he'd play just as well on the left or as the creative central midfielder. But what about the Kanga Kid, Forny? (assuming there's something in it, which is dangerous). And the Dramani chase. If we bring in someone specifically to play on the lfet, it raises an interesting question about Liam Lawrence - especially if we bring someone like Pennant in who is an out-and-out right winger And we've already got about 5-6 CMs, as well as the problem of trying to shoehorn Delap and his throw in somewhere. We'd certainly have some options, that's for sure. But none of 'em exactly seem done deals, but if it hints at where he's looking to strengthen, it does show he's focusing on pacey wide players, which has to be good.

i suppose he could be looking at them as impact players see how we do normally then bring on the pace, a bit like chelski do with SWP

Hypia yes for sure if he would come. Not keen on Pennant to be honest With the addition of Davies I think we have enough at centre half to be honest. Hypia is past is best and Pennant is IMHO a prima donna we shouldn't touch.

Agree, not sure if Pennant is a Pulis-type player. Don't know enough about him to be honest. Wouldn't Pennant's wages also be an issue? Presumably he's on a big salary and I don't think that bringing him in on more than established players would do dressing room harmony much good - plus presumably we have a set wage structure, which could prevent us from paying big wages in the first place (hence he wouldn't come)?

The spirit in the team is absolutely fantastic. A player like Pennant could destroy it. He is one of those big time Charlies that are so prevalent in todays game. A player whose talent does not match his ambition.

More links to players that are above our radar...whats the point?....it isn't going to happen. Spend the time and energy on more realistic options....please!...We need at least 3 more additions this week

Don't like the sound of Pennant. Undoubted quality but bloody hard work.
Hyppia - Yes please, just what we need, quality and experience. Seen it all & done it all.

Big money on Hyypia must be a big gamble on the risk that Pulis is convinced that he would make a £3m one-season, potentially crucial, difference over and above Shawcross, Cort or Davies (who is reportedly better there than RB.If we threw him into the CB mix, we could spend the money on a 'proper' RB) And you're convinced there are no comparable, cheaper and younger leader-type central defenders on the market with no similar worries over their legs. He's been a rock for 7-8 years, but surel there's a danger of imagining the player of 2004 or 2006 and forgettingyou're getting the bloke who's 35 in early October. The likes of Bruce, Pallister and Adams declined quickly about that age. I suppose Pulis is paid the big bucks to put his balls on the block and make these kinds of decisions. But that kind of money for a club like us on a player who is almost certainlywell on the road to decline, and may well be a spent force in the next 1-2 years is a hell of a gamble, isn't it? And you do worry about Pennant being a Billy Big Bollocks thinking he's doing a favour by coming. www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-fc/liverpool-fc-news/2008/07/21/i-am-staying-at-anfield-says-jermaine-pennant-64375-21375360/ Doesn't sound like he's got any intention of leaving

not if in those two years he plays a key role to solidifying us in the top league
if he does that then 3-million pounds is nothing

There are 2 'ifs' there though, aren't there?
And it's the ifs that make it a hell of a risk.
