Even when there is no colour clash? Even a blind Ref could tell the difference between Red n White striped shirts, white shorts & red socks against Bolton's strip surely.

well that covers most of the refs then, agree years ago there was only a change if the shirts clashed now I am sure it's all down to marketing.

They play in it a certain amount of games so that it gets enough exposure, when we had the white away kit 2 years ago it clashed whenever the red and white clashed, so we would wear it when it was unnecessary e.g. against Plymouth, Ipswich.

Teams can wear away kits no more than 8 times a season... (Premier League Rule)
When you think about it, we will also be wearing the yellow kit against arsenal, liverpool, manu, boro, sunderland, villa, and fulham... which would be 8 times in total. This allows for decent exposure and makes the people buying the yellow feel it was worth getting
iv begun to shy away from getting an away shirt because of the team not wearing them enough i.e. 2006/07 white away
