ALBION were today closing in on the record signing of Real Mallorca midfielder Borja Valero, with the Spanish club claiming he was Hawthorns-bound. The Baggies have effectively matched Valero's get-out clause of around £5million, with the Iberian club revealing on their website that he was set to complete the move to Albion. That has not yet been confirmed by Albion and is likely to be subject to personal terms being rubber-stamped, although that is expected to be pushed through to ensure no other clubs hi-jack the deal. He will also need to complete the medical formalities. Tony Mowbray was today busy preparing his side for their Premier League opener at Arsenal but his pursuit of Valero and his two team-mates Oscar Trejo and Nunes has certainly captured the imagination. But, at this stage, the move for Trejo looks to be a non-starter, with an official Mallorca statement saying: "We are preparing for the imminent departure of Borja Valero to West Bromwich Albion. Trejo has, for his part, assured the club that it is his intention to stay at Mallorca." One source also reported that a separate offer of around £3.5million had been made for Mallorca's Portuguese centre-half Nunes, although that would appear to be wide of the mark at this stage. Even so, he remains a target. Albion are remaining tight-lipped and conscious that other Premier League clubs remain in the hunt, especially for Valero, who is reportedly a target for Liverpool - who may step-up their interest following Villa's decision to field Gareth Barry in yesterday's UEFA Cup game. Valero, aged 23, would become Albion's record signing if he joined. Mallorca coach Gregorio Manzano admitted he was unhappy with the imminent departure of Valero. "The player (Valero) will not be allowed to leave unless the termination clause is terminated," said Manzano. "I can say no more until this issue is resolved." www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-sport/west-bromwich-albion-fc/west-bromwich-albion-fc-news/2008/08/15/borja-valero-deal-getting-closer-for-west-bromwich-albion-97319-21539822/Would be a fantastic signing if we get him and would definitely boost our chances of staying up. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Why is he going to keep clean sheets and score 20 goals for you?

Carson (the guy all of you wanted so badly) will keep the clean sheets and he will set up 20 of our standard 100 goals.

I didn't realise it was a race to sign players that wins you points.
Wait until the end of the season before you rub anything in.
Good luck against Arsenal btw.

Nah mate, just thought I'd rub it in. Where are the goals coming from mate? Presumably you were kidding when you were on about Bednar the other day. Good move releasing your 20+ goal top scorer though, maverick effort! What next, playing without a keeper?

Try and get your facts right, but that might be hard for an idiotic Stoke fan, Phillips was out of contract not released.

Miller, Moore and Bednar will get around 10 each. Then of course there is the midfield. We'll see.

By not offering him a two year deal (where's the logic there?) you effectively told him you weren't interested.

The Phillips situation is complicated. He didnt have a good game for the last few months after a knee injury. As a result his knee is a timebomb waiting to give way. We offered him a one year deal, which would automatically have gone to two if he'd have appearing in at least 19 games.

Yeah, you'll win the league. Cheers for the optimism, but 17th is what we're looking at. If your strikers score at least 30 as you say, along with your midfield chipping in with goals, surely you should win the league? Pessimistic.

Hang on, Phillips was released by virtue of the fact that you didn't offer him a contract he wanted. You could have kept him but for some wierd reason decided against it, therefore you released him. Is that easy enough for an idiotic Baggie to understand?

By not offering him a two year deal (where's the logic there?) you effectively told him you weren't interested. We were interested but it was too bigger risk I'm afraid. £2m over two-years on a player that could potentially have taken one bad tackle in pre-season and had to retire is far too bigger risk. We offered him a one-year deal with an automatic second year if he made 19 appearances, including sub appearances. If he can't back himself to play 19 games next season then why should we take the risk. Now he's even saying he didn't want to spend the end of his career battling relegation and wanted to have fun in the Championship. The bloke is getting more bitter by the day but 95% of Albion fans still hold him in the highest regard for what he achieved here as a player.

£2m is fuck all given the promotion though surely boys? Maybe it wasn't that he didn't back himself to play 19 games, maybe he was just insulted at the offer after he'd piled in all those goals for you?

Far too much of a gamble for a player who could potentially have never played a competitive game for us.

I don't dispute that mate, it was the way brazilian made out it was out of Albions' hands when quite clearly it wasn't.
