Alan Hudson is delighted to see his beloved Stoke back in the top flight - but he does not intend to watch them this season.
Hudson was capped twice by England during a thrilling two-year spell with City from 1974, and is still regarded as footballing royalty in the Potteries.
Under the tutelage of legendary manager Tony Waddington - subject of Hudson's new book, 'The Waddington Years', Hudson was a key component of a team renowned for their entertaining brand of football.
But although he is loath to criticise current manager Tony Pulis, who he describes as "a bloody good bloke", entertainment is something he believes will be sorely lacking at the Britannia Stadium over the next nine months.
"I saw them play three or four times at the back end of last season and they were very fortunate to get promotion," he said.
"I don't think they've got enough quality and the days of Wimbledon are gone - where you could get away with hard work and knocking the ball forward.
"Stoke fans want to see football. They are very excited around here, but only because they've been watching teams like Scunthorpe for so long and all of a sudden they'll see Chelsea and Arsenal.
"They're not excited about their own team. They're used to Stanley Matthews, Jimmy Greenhoff, Gordon Banks and myself - they've had some fantastic players and now they don't have any great ones.
"They've got decent ones but you can't do anything with decent ones in the Premier League because you'll get relegated."
He added: "I definitely want them to stay up, that would be fantastic for the people of Stoke who've suffered for so long.
"But unless they start playing decent football, I won't go there."

He's a legend in my eyes & if he believes football should be played on the ground then he's entitled to his opinion.

Why don't he just 'feck off' back to cyprus the cockney 'cuunt'
instead of telling everyone how good he was, and how great he was / stoke were.
Unfortunatley things aint what they used to be, you are a has been, why not feck off and drool over the arsenal or the shit if yiu wanna watch wonderful football.
80% of the premiership teams play survival football. You could hardly call Everton entertaining ???

I'm a born and bred stokie and couldn't be more proud that we're in with the big boys again after all these years. I remember Huddy's second spell at Stoke and he will always be a legend in my eyes. Sorry to upset people, as i know pride can take over a bit at times, but if you are honest with yourself and get past the fact some of his points could be construde as unfair to the proudest of Stokies (i class myself as one) everything he says is bang on the money.
Just because someone can be arrogant at times doesn't mean everything they say is suddenly complete bollocks.

That might be the case trumpton but the last thing stoke need at the moment if for an ex player to be spouting such tripe in the media

It wasnt personal and vindictive Ill leave you to judge

Furthermore, with his sheer class he would have been an asset to the club and the premier league. Maybe people didn't see him in his prime but I can tell you he really was that good.

Very dissapointed in Huddy.
Should have kept it to himself in public out of respect for the club and the fans.

Fair play but i have been watching stoke since 1980 and we are actually on the up at last, i really do think that these comments could be ever so damaging to our progress, he didn't need to say this, did he!!!! I have respect for all ex stoke players but this has really annoyed me. I just hope no one is listening within the game.

Perhaps he's calculated he'll be better off skanking drinks from mugs at hostelries elsewhere around the City rather than the kind of people who get to the ground regularly these days?

I know there is light years between Stoke and Chelsea but you cannot tell me watching Chelsea is entertaining , so what is Hudson trying to say?. Infact I will go has far to say that of all the Premiership games I watched last season 95% were shite . So the chance of seeing entertainment in the Premiership is a longshot . Yes Hudson was a great player and a Stoke legend but he should get behind Pulis or shut his cockney gob. We are not the team of the 70's, a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then ,Stoke City football Club is a totally different Club from the 70's in every shape and form apart from the fans who have rode the rollercoater ride . So Hudson Shut it.
