It has been inferred that this was a Scholes inspired move and he's currently carrying the can for the breakdown. Some are saying that TP nixxed the deal at the final hurdle. The Positives that I take from this situation :
Several people at the club are empowered to source new players.
The manager has a final refusal on all deals.
We are prepared to comeup with a competitive fee if the right player is available.
We are looking at players of a standard that few would have imagined playing at the Brit 12 months ago.
And finally, if a big name player is signed, the interest will be immense - if proof is needed look only to the size of the 'Zigic is signing thread!' If ever the club needed to know whether large scale investment would garner a response from the supporter base, look how quickly that thread grew. You can just imagine Tony Scholes looking at that and thinking of Shirt sales.

Several people at the club are empowered to source new players. Do you think that these 'several' people are up to the job? With very few signings (so far) I don't think they are.

"The manager has a final refusal on all deals."
therein lies the problem

It's all well and good looking at high profile players, and if we could bring in one of the 'super-stars' then it would only be good for the club. But, the fact remains this policy thus far has left us woefully short on numbers, particularly at the back. We need to be competitive all over the field and I am reallystarting to worry now, especially reading Pulis' comments about the problems signing players and issues at the club.

Yes we're all delighted at the quality of the names linked and no we would never have believed it 12 months ago. That being said i would have like another 3-4 more decent signings here already as squad fillers (say 2-3 mill a piece) and THEN go for the big name players that we all know we are 'unlikely' to get. I'm loving the players we've been linked and it raised all our optimism but where will be if we get none of them and we haven't even got enough 'numbers' to cover suspensions and injuries (unless they're in CM).

Some people are just fcuking stupid blaming Tony Scholes. Face facts, the guy was worth 15m, he plays for a massive club, who are in Europe regularly & its a beautiful location with great weather. Now let me think why he wouldn't wan't to move to a team who he has probably never heard of, and who are going to struggle to stay up

Not difficult to be linked with just about any player....the object is to sign one of them!!...Then I will be impressed. The Zigic thread turned into a soap opera which was very addictive...mind you half of the posts were from Porkins Belly and his fantasy updates

I think TP was right in his approach. He obviously likes the loan route, then deal in Jan if he likes what he sees. It's a lot of money to blow if he's wrong about him.
This worked fine with Ryan and Liam, but also worked well with Stephen Wright, who he clearly didn't fancy after his loan spell.
Interesting to see that this would also be Blackburn's preferred route. Maybe Valencia and the player are going for a bit of brinkmanship to see what happens. The publicity stirs up interest.
But, if he doesn't want to go to Turkey, and Blackburn keep Santa Cruz, Jones is due back quicker for Sunderland, it is entirely possible that Stoke Cty's deal will be the best on the table at the end of August. Valencia clearly want some money for him, and to get him off the wage bill, and I bet the player would suddenly want to come to us if we were his last route into the English Premiership this season. TP would then get his way on the loan deal, which is simply the hard world of negotiations in this market.
Funny old game, on and off the field.
