ROY Keane’s search for attacking reinforcements has led him to Portugal striker Ariza Makukula, with Sunderland considering a bid for the Benfica target man.
Aug 12 2008 by Mark Douglas, The Journal
The Black Cats have registered their interest in the 6ft 3ins forward, and while that is yet to extend to a formal bid from Wearside, Makukula is moving up Keane’s dwindling list of striking targets.
Reports in the Portuguese Press claimed that Stoke had an offer for the forward turned down over the weekend, and that may now prompt the Black Cats into formalising their interest. Fellow Premier League newcomers Hull City were also linked with a move, although their manager Phil Brown has subsequently denied that is the case.
Makukula, 27, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but is a Portuguese citizen, was only signed by Benfica in January but a change in management has seen him fall out of favour.
He has scored three goals in 18 games for Benfica, and also has service in France and Spain under his belt. A prolific spell on loan at Maritimo, where he scored 10 goals in 13 games, helped him secure a move to the Eagles but he has not replicated that form in Lisbon.
He impressed enough at Maritimo to make his Portugal debut last year, scoring against Kazakhstan after replacing the
injured Nuno Gomes. After seeing some of his priority targets move elsewhere or become unavailable, Keane has admitted that he may be forced to start the season with the squad that he took to Ireland last week.
But that will not deter either him, Niall Quinn or chief executive Peter Walker from working desperately to secure reinforcements at centre-back, left-back and in attack before the transfer window closes at the end of August.
On the striking front, the emergence of Makukula (pictured) would fill a void that Keane feels must be filled. With Keane not prepared to meet Reading’s valuation of Kevin Doyle, the Irish striker has been ruled out of contention – as has Louis Saha.
