This may help or it may not depending on your knowledge. Have a read anyway but once you know the basics the only real thing to do is keep playing until you get used to it. Didn't take me long to pick it up. poker.gamble.co.uk/rules/poker-rules.asp

basically the flop is the 1st 3 cards that come out, then the turn is the 4th card, and the river is what the last card is called.
Here is the card ranking High card - if nobody has any of the blow, if you have a higher card than anybody else, you win)
Pair - two of the same card, you win if you have a higher single pair than anybody elses single pair or if they don't have a pair
Two pair - same as above but with 2 different pairs, the pair that counts the most is the higher on, for example, if you have two pair of aces and twos, and your opponent has two pair of kings and queens, you win becaus eyou have the highest single pair.
Trips - three of the same card, beats any of the above, and as usual, you win if you and your opponent both happen to have trips if you have a higher one.
Straight - 5 cards in a numerical order, of any suit for example, ace, 2,3,4,5. if more than one person has a straight, the winner is the person with the highest final card
Flush - 5 cards of the same suit, as with the straight, if two people both have a flush, the person with the highest final card wins.
Full house - a pair and trips, together for example if your hand is Jack queen, and a jack and 2 queens come out on the flop, this is a full house. If more than one person has a full house, then the winner is the person with the highest trips, for example you have 3 queens and 2 jacks, and your opponent has 3 tens and 2 queens you win.
4 of a kind - self explanatory, 4 cards of the same number, unlikely as it is, if more than 1 person has 4 of a kind, the winner is the person with the highest 4 of a kind.
Straight flush - 5 cards in numberical order and of the same suit
Royal flush - the ultimate poker hand, similar to a straight flush, but is 10, jack, queen, king and ace, of the same suit.

If you download most poker programs such as pacific poker or PKR (if you have a high speed connection) you will find they do free tables with play money designed for you to learn online.

I would recommend you take the online option first with the play money so you get the hang of it and then when you feel confident try for small stakes tables after that.
Then get a few mates round for a few games at money of your choosing before you even think about hitting any form of tournaments. You will find online play completely different from playing offline where you will most likely fold more hands and will definatly need to pick up[ on reactions. All this will come in time time though.
Leanr to walk before you can run is the best advice.
