Johnny Speight created Alf Garnett to ridicule the rubbish he spoke and mock those who shared his views. Unfortunately there were those who saw that character as a spokesman for the common man. Warren Mitchell tells a story about going to watch Spurs and someone coming up and telling him he was doing a great job and to keep getting at the c**ns. Mitchell was disgusted and told him We aren't having a go at c**ns we're were having a go at idiots like you"

Sometimes it's to subtle for certain people to realise that the joke is on the racist, like Rising Damp, which i love, you were laughing at Rigsby not with him, But that said i bet if you were a black kid at school age when those programs were on TV it wasn't much fun.

Johnny Speight himself used to get depressed when Garnett became a sort of cult hero. To hold him up now as being part of a golden age because things weren't 'over pc' is ludicrous.
