According to Skysports Micheal Vaughan is set to announce his resignation at a press conference at 1 today. Also they think either Robert Key or Andrew Strauss will be his replacement.

We need wholesale changes for the 5th test. It dosnt mean an awful lot in terms of a result, but we need to regain at least a bit of credibility. That means Vaughan, Collingwood, Ambrose, Sidebottom and possibly Anderson and Monty wouls all be left out if it were up to me. We've all seen the renewed life a fully fit Freddy gave us, so its about time Jones and Harmison came back into the attack and showed some of the aggression that gave Flintoff 7 key wickets.
Strauss Cook (c) Pietersen Bell Bopara/Shah/Denly/Key Prior/Foster Flintoff Broad/Anderson Jones Harmison Panesar/Swann
Strauss and Cook work well at the top together, and as far as the captaincy goes, we need to look at the future. Cook has always been groomed as a future captain and in my opinion, he should take over now while he knows he'll get help from Strauss, Pietersen ect. He dosnt seem like a Greame Smith type hothead, and he bodes well under pressure. I think it will only make him a better player in the long run.
Pietersen likes to be centre of attention, we all know that. And for the past 2 series, hes virtually been coming in at 3 anyway. I think it would be a good move to promote him. Bell has ability and in time I think he'll find his consistancy, so Id keep him in.
Prior would be my choice for the keeper. He made some mistakes behind the wickets admittedly, but he is no worse than Ambrose, and Prior is now an even better batsman than before. Foster has shown he is probably the best England has to offer behind the stumps, but I have serious reservations about his batting skills.
Sidders hasnt been at his best for a while now, and he definitely needs a rest. Id replace him with Simon Jones, who seems to be fit again. That choice needs no explaination. Harmison should have been in the team instead of Colly for the last test anyway. Dont give me all this shit about his 100 either. It means NOTHING if we cant take 20 wickets. That leaves the 4th seamer slot open for either Broad or Anderson. If the pitch looks hard and fast, you play Anderson to suit the conditions. If the pitch looks bowler friendly, you choose the stronger batsman, Broad, because you shouldnt fail to take 20 with Flintoff and Harmison.
Monty hasnt impressed me an awful lot lately, he needs a more variation to cause trouble to top class batsmen. Swann looked really good in the one dayers, so maybe he aught to be given a run out in the test team.

About time too (Vaughan)
Totally agree with BHP on Monty
Fair enough, he has got out a lot of the worlds best batsmen, but is he now in a Im the number one choice frame of mind
His variety does need a lot of improvement
As one of the pundits on Cricket Writers this morning said: Murali would have gone through the South Africans in the fourth innings on that wicket

im pretty gutted about vaughan. i watched such a shower of shite with my grandad as i was growing up - atherton, stewart, hussain. vaughan turned us into a great side for years. i suppose this is the price you pay for failing miserably with the bat.
paul collingwood has stood down as 1-day captain too, so expect pietersen to be announced as captain for both sides.

doubt pietersen will get the job more likely to be cook who gets it im just a little concerned that they are going to give him to much pressure at such a young age

I'm pretty sad to see the guy go but it probably had to be done. I don't think Peitersons the man to take over as captain. Strauss then Cook as an understudy.

Do any of England's starting XI captain their county?

Pietersen will get the job but he shouldn't as he couldn't captain a canoe. There are only 2 viable candidates for the job (KP and Cook) as none of the rest of the top 6 are definates for the starting XI. I also agree its time to drop Monty, but this is unlikely to happen at the Oval as the track is always one which suits spinners and we could potentially play 2

err...
could it be... 1. he has just played himself back into form with a brilliant century. 2. that said century and wet-nursing of the tail played us into a winning position that we cocked up. 3. he is one of the few English batsmen with the necessary grit and determination to show real fight. 4. He's "English" ;D

I would give it to Strauss, Pietersen or Flintoff(Too injury prone at the moment though).
Think it's like if Terry started playing terribly for England, thne people get on his back so much, that the pressure mounts and the players performances go to the dogs if they are not a stron enough character. Gotta feel for Vaughan really, pressure caused him to keep getting worse and now he is at the bottom of the selection pile. He needs to play some better games at county level again before he breaks into the england squad again.

I think KP will get both jobs.
I dont think they will split the captaincy again. & i think thats a big reason as to why Colly has stepped down today as well.
Credit to Vaughan did a great job as captain.
