Following on from Four Candles thread. How many shops like that still around where you could buy 1 screw or a couple of curtain hooks? Bit like Mayers store in Birches Head in the 60s when I used to visit me grandad he always sent me down for a bottle of parrafin for the heater. You could buy anything there. There were no tills but counter assistant put money in a tube thingy that went on a pulley to upstairs then your change came back down same way. Is Mayers still there?

Mayers is still here, although it underwent a bit of a makeover a few years ago and hasn't really been the same since. They also have an adjoining petshop now too.
Used to get my small plastic footballs for school breaktimes at Grove from there, and wrap them up in a load of coloured tape.
Hit a dinnerlady in the arse with one once, and then in my efforts to kick the ball away, hit the headmaster's window too, as he was standing inside looking through it.
We still won 33 - 30. I think.
