It's pronounced Poo-lis isn't it? It would be spelt Pullis otherwise. English spelling bears no relation at all to pronunciation. I say Pullis, but in TP's West Country accent I imagine he says Poolis.

"English spelling bears no relation at all to pronunciation." none at all? Well, alright, that was shorthand, but it's not a phonetic language - you can't tell how a word sounds just by looking at it, like you can in Spanish or French or Italian.

That may be, but "book" is definitely "bewk" and not "buck".

I have a feeling that replying to a thread on this was my very first post a few years ago.
TP says 'Pew-liss' as do a lot of the rest of the wider family. However, some of the family say 'Pull-iss' my wife uses both depnding upon which one she is speaking about! In Malta it is pronounced 'Police' but if anyone shouts that across the street in Newport everyone runs and starts hiding stuff, so that is not verry popular over here!
Oh , I always say Pew-liss and never Pull-iss for what thats worth.
