As a follow from on supersmashinggreat earlier thread about those of us born in the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s what do you remember from those days. Heres my top 10 list:
1. Playing footie on Wolstanton Marsh all day then moving closer to the road to play under floodlights of street lamps as it got dark.
2. Cycling to Whitmore to trainspot on the Crewe-Stafford line.
3. Sneaking into Porthill Cricket ground without paying to watch Gary Sobers play for Norton.
4. Building me own bike from bits found at Longport tip
5. Nicking a speedometer from a wreck at macguinesses and wondering how to get it to work on me bike.
6. Riding down Dannys Bank by Longport station on home made sledge.
7. Throwing bangers into the pool at the Dingle to try and stun the perch.
8. Supporting Stoke and Vale.
9. Paper round for Mat Dillon in Wolstanton before Ron Proctor took over. Who remembers the annual free trip to Blackpool on Good Fridays sponsored by PMT and local newsagents. Mat Dillon used to give us all ten bob spending money as well.
10. Getting pissed on Woodpecker cider at Kibblestone Camp.

1. Seeing who had the best squashed coin from putting it on the coal train track behind Longton Park
2. Skateboarding in Longton Park until the park shut. Then that grumpy parkie would get in his car and try to force us off the "Skateboard Run".
3. Playing doffers by jumping over the scummy brook in Gom's Mill.
4. Seeing who was brave daft enough to skateboard down Carlisle Street AND Red Bank in Dresden - standing up.
5. Buying smoke pellets in Kwik Save in Longton and letting them off in phone boxes and waiting until someone opened the door.
6. Being small enough to get in that tunnel in Gom's Mill.

lawry, you mean there was life in Wolstanton before Ron Proctor? I always thought he'd been there since before the flood (Noah's that is, not on the marsh), he looked like it to me anyhow although he was always friendly.
frasier, where is the white rock please?

At the bottom of Blurton bank there is or was a lane that took you to the back end of Hem heath pit. Well white rock was, to me, at the time, a white chalk mountain ;D on the right. Kinda between the pit and the bottom of Meaford drive.

Somebody must remember Matt Dillon. He had 2 newsagents shops on Wolstanton high street. First one a few doors down from junction with Ellison St and the 2nd one where late Ron Proctors is now. Sold up in late 60's to Proctors who soon reduced to one shop. Matt Dillon was an avid Man Utd fan and used to take a couple of us paperboys to old Trafford occasionally. Great bloke. His son was in the trade also and always wondered if Dillons New Agents chain was anyway linked to the family.
