89p a pint – but margin is only 2p By Paul Collins 18/07/2008 10:56 New licensee Belal Hussain is serving pints for 89p after buying in bulk to earn big brewery discounts. The landlord of the Marksman, in West Bromwich, has seen a full house at his pub every night since he opened at the beginning of July. The former trainee accountant said: “The deal has exceeded all my expectations. About 80% of my customers say they have chosen to come to my pub instead of JD Wetherspoon.” Hussain bought the pub from Tattershall Castle Group in May — it had been on the market for £750,000. He takes deliveries six days a week. His offer extends to pints of Carlsberg, Kronenbourg, John Smiths, Strongbow and Guinness. He admitted the aim of the deal is to “bring the pub back to the people” during the economic downturn, but says his own profit margins are not great. He said: “We’ve been selling up to 3,000 pints a day, but making 2p per pint.” Police feared the deal on cheap beer would encourage binge drinking, but Hussain and his staff have been strict about limiting the amount of alcohol each customer has. Hussain said: “The police weren’t happy at first, but they are impressed with how well we have managed it. “I tell every person as they order their first pint that four is the maximum and then they must have two soft drinks.” At busy times, when unable to keep an eye on everyone in the pub, Hussain temporarily halts the deal. --- Wish it was local

That's still 6 grand though. He could have made it 90p without to much uproar from customers! That's an extra grand a night

3000 x 2pence is only £60 a day, he'll have to pay staff £30 a shift + other overheads, don't think he'll be in business to long unfortunatley ;(
Unless he sells bags of crisps at a fiver a go ;D

“I tell every person as they order their first pint that four is the maximum and then they must have two soft drinks.” Id imagine the pubs around it aint doing too badly, only allowed 4 pints?? Im sure people begin to care less about the price of the drink, and more about how much of it they can get after 4 pints.

I'd save a fortune on beer but the taxi home would cost about £40. I think I'll give it a miss.
A lot of pubs around Stoke are charging £2.50 a pint and struggling. Expensive beer means less customers in your pub. A pub with only a few customers is avoided by drinkers because the pub then lacks atmosphere which means even less customers until the pub shuts down. Cheap beer is the future. If pubs and brewerys halved their profit mark ups maybe they could sell three to four times more beer.

Pittshill Workingmens club is £2.36 for a pint of Carling
That is disgraceful for a workingmans club

That's only what he makes on the beer though Jones
Having owned a pub the mark up on soft drinks was our real income ( and the women but wont go into that ;D)
Agree with the above- even at 99p a pint still a bargain- it is West Bromwich though so limiting them to 4 pints a night hardly necessary -think about it, how many are going to spend their week's wages of 3.56 in one night?
