Anyone else think that they saw us coming? That seems like a good deal for Reading seeing how he's got a dodgy knee ???

Fucking typical !
I guess if we signed Christiano Ronaldo youd say it was a bad signing because he dives
only in stoke - only in stoke ! ( I shuffle off, muttering under my breath )

Look we have got a quality player proven to score goals in the prem. Coates would not have paid the money if he we couldn't afford it. The 5 million will have all sorts of conditions and lets face it If his goals keep us up it will be money well spent. Any sell on clause will be for a percentage of any money over and above what we paid for him so I dont see your problem.
Why can't you be pleased that we are being ambitous ???

it just seems alot for a player who averages a goal every 4 games and has dodgy knees, and wont really have much of a re-sale value when he turns 30

A striker who is proven at this level is worth his weight in gold for prem players we've got to pay prem fees

Kits scored more goals last season than players who are valued more highly.

Or maybe on the flip side, David Villa? Get a grip man. He is an EXCELLENT signing and will prove to be a very good player for us. If he stays fit, I think he will score at least 15 goals for us in our debut season. I think that Kitson and Fuller will link up very well. When Fuller creates chances, Kitson will pop them in. Also, with the delivery Lennie provides, Kitson will do very well. I also think we should go for Hunt of Reading SGS

It would be very interesting to know the ins and outs of the structure of the fee.
But I don't suppose we'll ever know.
Early reports seemed to suggest the initial fee would only be about half of the fee that's been reported tonight. You'd think both Stoke and Kitson would have to do well for it to get up to £5m+.
I guess it suits both parties to inflate the fee; them to show their fans they got value and us to show we really mean business in the Premier.
But although his age and the stuff floating about about his knees are factors in the mix that are a bit worrying, maybe 5m is about par for the course for someone with his C.V.?
If you look at the list of players who got 10 goals in the Prem last season, he's the only one who would give us a second glance and we could have got for less than 10m in the English market.
Maybe there's better value in the European market, but I suppose that's not Pulis' way.
If he gets us 8-9 league goals next season, he'll probably be worth it.

www.cambridge-united.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10423~1346986,00.html "Reading have been honest and open about the entire process and we have been open about the entire process, and we have been able to reach an agreement which has already seen a very large sum of money deposited in the bank account of Cambridge United." The transfer was announced this afternoon with a headline value of £5.5million but the U's Chairman cautioned, "As is the norm with transfer fees, we believe the fee paid up front is considerably less than the headline figure."Law continued, "We will be looking to use this 'windfall' wisely and will effectively invest it in the Club over the coming seasons.

I don't live to far from Cambridge when I'm not at Uni so I'm glad they've seen a bit of the dosh - They're a decent club. They got shafted really on the fee when Reading took him.

Alan Shearer also had a dodgy knee, lots of players have had bad knee injuries and gone on to have great careers afterwards.

Top and bottom of it really
Who could you say from last year would get us 10-12 goals in the Prem?
Mama - defo NO Ricki - unlikely Lawro - unlikely
Kitson MAY get us the goals that keep us up. But now we need someone to provide the service.

Don't they basically say that whatever the sell-on is they'll have to deduct the 300k they've already received (initial fee, Reading promotion, Reading appearances etc) rather than say that the sell-on figure from the Stoke transfer itself has been calculated at 300k?
So we're still really none the wiser?
It is understood United gain to receive 17.5% of the transfer fee MINUS what we have already received, which is believed to be around the £300,000 region. This could leave United with a bumper payday of over half a million pounds - a Godsend for a club of United's size, and a move which could set the club straight for years to come, should the board invest wisely.
At the time of writing the deal is yet to be confirmed, but as soon as it is, it will be hoped a statement issued by Cambridge United will explain the full financial benefit for the club.

If he scores the goals (along with Ric) that keep us up then hes cheap.
However we should not forget our lads at the back who, whilst not getting the attention at the moment, will be equally important to our season.
Personally I am delighted for Ryan who nailed his colours to the mast on day 1 and could prove to be our star man

Someone mentioned on another thread that the fee is 3 mil with another 2 mil dependant on Stoke staying up and a further half mil if he scores 15 goals or more. If this is the deal i think its ok.

I think it's safe to say the up front fee was probably between 2-3 million ? the rest depending on various degrees of success by either the player or the club.

It entirely depends on what Kitson does for us this season. I'd imagine a striker is worth around 1/2 million per goal? If he gets us 10 goals like he did last season we'll only go down if the rest of the team don't perform, a la Reading. To stay up we have to gamble and this, I believe, is an excellent gamble.

You've all been crying out for signings, we've made one, splashed the cash & (some) are moaning already, unbelievable! Whilst I wouldn't call him prolific, he's an international player, knows where the goal is, is a clever player with a great work ethic, next season will prove whether it hasbeen money spent or not, 10 goals from him will be a big help in securing a second season in the prem!
But more than anything it's a signing, a statement of the chairmans intent & a demonstration of confidence in the manager, a move in the right direction if you ask me!
Some of you'd moan if you found a fiver, "well it could have been a tenner couldn't it!"

I think he'll have to get more than 10 tbh Maybe but looking at last season's top scorers table if he got 13 he'll have done his job I'm expecting around 10 from Fuller too ;-)

Looking at that list reinforces the point that anything over 10 goals in the Prem is pretty exceptional.
If he gets 10 again, he's done very well.
If we can get 2 strikers both getting 10, we'll have done fantastically.
