Kitson all set for Stoke move By OAE - 17/07/2008 22:19
Dave Kitson is expected to complete a move to Stoke City in the morning for a fee believed to be in the region of £5 million.
It was all so obvious as soon as it was announced that Dave Kitson would miss this weeks friendlies as he had a 'cold.' We were assured by the club that is was simply a bug and he would feature in Saturdays game against MK Dons. What a load of bollocks that was.
Rumours have been rife all week that Stoke were in the hunt for Kitson and talks over a move were at 'advanced stages' and now the deal will go through on Friday morning for a fee believed to be in the region of £5 million. It is not clear how the payment of this sum will be made but it is likely that it will be inclusive of add on's, meaning the initial payment is no where near that mark.
Kitson joined the club for a mere £150,000 on Boxing Day 2003 and has scored a total of 54 goals in 132 appearances for the club and was again our top scorer last season. He missed a large chunk of our first season in the Premiership though through injury despite scoring our first ever top flight goal against Middlesbrough but returned nearer the end of that season and scored a couple of goals including a winner against Newcastle.
Kitson's departure will leave a sour taste in the mouths of most Royals fans who only last month voted Kitson the player they least wanted to see depart the Madejski Stadium this summer here on OffatEleven.
Many feel Kitson is our only player with genuine Premiership qualities and would have guaranteed us at least 20 goals this coming season in a promotion push.
The fact that we were told the reason he wouldn't play this week, in firendlies at Forest Green and Havant and Waterlooville, was because he had a cold when he was clearly finalising a move to the Brittania Stadium will also anger fans who are becoming frustrated at the lack of progress in the transfer market this summer.
There will not be too much optimism of a decent replacement either when you look back at our awful transfer dealings over the last two years. We barely invested any of the vast sums of cash we got for being in the Premiership in new players so its highly unlikely we will invest much, if any, of this much smaller amount of cash we will received from this transfer.
OffatEleven would like to wish Dave Kitson all the best at Stoke, he has given us some fine moments over almost five years he has been here. A footballer who was never afraid to speak his mind, even if he knew not many would agree with him (Just look at the whole 'I don't give a shit about the FA cup' statement!) and a player of his skill deserves to be playing in the Premiership. Its just a shame that it won't be with us any longer.

It's good to have this the other way round for once, having suffered similar situations going against us recently with Higginbotham and Hoefkens.
