Not digging up old wounds here with a debate about TP and using the overseas market...apart from Jamaica....to date more than 50% of the transfers done so far have been signed from overseas clubs....maybe we just dont have the scouting network in place but with limited UK options surely we have to exploit every option. Have we been seriously linked with any european players...thought everyone wanted to come to the prem?

They do... But no one has heard of stoke, and we spent a million pounds and Bangoura and look what happened there! For our first season in the prem can we afford to take those risks?

Pulis wants tried and tested premier league players, you carn't blame him. Im sure there are some good bargains out there but a lot of foreigners would just come to Stoke to pick up a big wage and get noticed by one of the big clubs.

true - but when you look at the daft prices being chucked about for relatively average UK players, shopping oversees seems to be a must for a team on a limited budget. You can get your fingers burned, but look at the quality Wenger has bought in for relatively small fees over the past two or three years.

He tried for that fella in France and been linked with a few overseas centre halves as well. Good to see though that Rudgies trip to the Euro's wasn't a complete waste of time and money!

West Brazil bolton and middlesboro seem to be able to bring in overseas players...and they are hardly big clubs. Maybe some are crap but at the moment Stoke's potential signings list looks depressingly thin

guessing now: perhaps TP's thinking is to concentrate on the bigger money (for Stoke) top end signings such as Carson,Kitson & then if/when they dont come off THEN make concrete moves re signing the next players doen on his shopping list
presumably TP's top of the list will be prem experienced players.

If you want to spend a lot of money, buy British and get an average player. Go abroad and buy cheap, you can get a real coming star, an average player or someone who can't adapt to the Premiership.
If I could decide, I'd choose foreign. A potential star player for less money. You always win some and loose some, but in the end, better to take this chance than paying millions for an average player.

Looks lke that Guirane N'Daw bloke finally signed for Nantes yesterday.
I'm a bit surprised we haven't had a few more links with overseas-based players though, given the inflated domestic market.
There was an interview with Rudge a few weeks ago where he said he felt we'd have to look abroad due to the English market being ridiculous, but nothing's really happened there yet.
Earlier in the summer, I think we were mentioned in passing with Mendy who went to Hull, and some Argentinian who went to a Serie A club from a Swiss club, so maybe we are looking to a degree.

Hope Pulis realises that it's a sackable offense!

The problem with overseas players is unless they are fluent in English then they could affect the dressing room spirit - they can't exactly join in the banter if they can't understand it!
I think the togetherness of our squad will be a huge plus next season.

Most of them seem to speak an acceptable level of English though - doesn't seem to have affected the likes of Pompey etc.

Mr Magic makes a valid point about the ability of Wenger to spot outstanding overseas talent. However, Wenger also has the luxury of putting these gems into Arsenal's reserves while they learn the 'Arsenal Way' of playing. Unfortunately, Pulis, even if he had the scouting network to discover these talented youngsters, does not have the breathing space to allow them to develop outside the first team.

I get the feeling that TP goes for players on home soil more often than not because he likes to study the qualitys of a player in depth, finding out what makes them tick, their character, their past and their hunger. He may also know a manager this player has played for in the past to have a discussion about him too.
TP will not just sign somebody that he has tried to judge over the course of a couple of games and thats maybe the reason we are where we are now, why more often than not we make a signing that slots perfectly straight into our set up.
The point i'm making is thats its a lot easier to study a player that is playing on home soil than one who plays in a foreign country.

But then you have to accept that you will be paying more. We cannot have it both ways.
