Good article: Potty To Let Carson Join Stoke...
Paul Ince and Gareth Southgate are not only the two youngest managers in the Premier League, but they could also be the daftest if they allow Scott Carson to go to Stoke without putting up a fight. To allow a player who was briefly England's No 1 last season to walk headlong into a certain relegation battle without matching the Potters' £4m bid seems careless in the extreme.
Boro fans in particular should be rather worried at the notion that Southgate could be planning to start next season with Brad Jones and Ross Turnbull vying for the goalkeeper's jersey after the departure of Mark Schwarzer.
Jones' loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday two seasons ago was so poor that a section of his own fans took to throwing coins at his head, while Turnbull was sent back from last season's loan spell at Cardiff City, who turned to Kasper Schmeichel and then Peter Enckelman after a series of errors from the young Englishman.
Southgate has made it clear that there will not be big money spent at the Riverside this summer after the January purchase of Afonso Alves took the lion's share of the budget, but a goalkeeper should be his very first priority. Carson would fit the bill perfectly at an affordable £4m.
Forget the Croatia game, there's a reason why Liverpool paid £750,000 for his services, why he was Charlton's player of the season two years ago, why Martin O'Neill wanted him permanently for Villa until he was quoted stupid money by Liverpool and why he was playing against Croatia in the first place. He is a very good young goalkeeper who at 22 has plenty of time to iron out wobbles in both his football and his confidence.
Carson would be a perfect fit for a Boro side with the emphasis on youth. He might also be a perfect fit for Blackburn and a new manager who wants either competition or a replacement for Brad Friedel.
Paul Ince is making all the right noises about keeping Friedel, but a £2.5m bid for a 37-year-old might be too difficult to resist. Either way, Rovers' only other senior keeper after the departure of Enckelman is Jason Brown, and he is unlikely to be trusted with a Premier League starting place any time soon.
So talk has turned to a Blackburn move for Paul Robinson as a £5m 'makeweight' in a possible David Bentley deal. This is the same Paul Robinson who let in four goals an inexplicable five times last season for Tottenham. I know which keeper I would rather have at a cheaper price.
And yet it is to Stoke that Carson travelled on Monday for talks after they had a £4m bid accepted by a club increasingly desperate for funds to complete their own summer signings. Carson was at Charlton two seasons ago - playing in a stronger squad than Stoke's - so he will know what fate will befall him this season if he goes there.
He will be busy, that's for certain. And he may well impress enough to get another move next summer if Stoke lose their battle against relegation. But it would seem to make sense for other Premier League managers to cut out the middle men and move now. If Boro fans have to watch the ball fly past Jones time and again next season, they may well curse the day that Carson drove to Stoke for talks.

for a club of our size i think it would be a bit of a coup if he signed. traditionally we`ve always had good keepers.

I thought he had quite a good season last year, as his promotion to the England side proved
One mistake against Croatia, in a game he should never have been thrown into does not make him a bad keeperSign him now, and set the ball rolling

I have real mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand it is great that we have actually bid and had accepted £4m for an England capped player who is still only 22. The conservative side of me says, spend £4m on a midfielder!!
We have been begging for transfer news for weeks and now it comes I wish it had been kept secret! Now the news has broke, I'll be amazed if the deal goes through - we have probably just alerted the bigger fish to his availability at what tbh is a ridiculously low fee by premiership standards.
From liverpool forum:-
"How come we got 2 million off Villa to loan him for a year and only want 3 million plus add ons to sell him. How long left on his contract?"

It would be a good signing as a statement of intent certainly. But as far as staying up goes... well potential or not, he isn't actually that good right now. That's why it's Stoke and WBA being linked to him at such a low price.

Yeah we saw his international quality against Croatia didn't we? Wouldn't be surprised if he never played for England again.

A good keeper is key to survival imo, he is clearly a very good goalkeeper, this would be an excellent signing, also when was the last time you could say i support a team with an England international playing for them ?
