I've just been offered a job in LA - 1 year contract with a possibility to extend it to 2 or 3 years.
What's LA like and if I accept the job, which places should I avoid? Also, are there any bars there that I'd be able to watch Stoke matches in?

Cheers mate! I'm pretty pleased about the offer as you can imagine, but I'll be leaving the country half way through our first season in the Prem, which is a bit annoying. A friend of mine said some channels have live Prem games on Saturdays at 7am, so I'm really hoping that's true!
As for my work, I'm a researcher in chemistry - quite near the start of my career, so job security is non-existent at this stage!

I returned from LA recently its a great City and there plenty of sports bars that show live Premiership football. And social side over there is brilliant. Enjoy.

Never turn a chance like that down whilst your young free and single, if you can play football gives becks a phone he has a team that you may get a few games, and his Mrs. may have a few mates "ooh we love the english accent" and as for your avavtar - i've just had some lawn taken back and the area block paved, the guy doing it found a builders shovel under the turf, must have been there 35 years, you can have it if you want ;D

Cheers for the comments lads. Northwich - I play two leagues above the very lowest league in the football pyramid, so I probably stand a chance of forcing my way in to the Galaxy side. Oh yeah, I'll take the shovel.

Fox Soccer Channel, Setanta Sports, and ESPN all show plenty of live Prem games, and you can get a lot of the Saturday 3pm kick-off games (as your mate said, they would be shown live at 7am Pacific Time) I'm on the opposite coast, so I can't help you much with info on LA, but all the best if you do move over here!

Cheers lads,
I accepted the job yesterday, so it looks like I'll be in LA for at least a year. It hasn't really sunk in yet. I actually accepted the job after having had a few down the pub, but I still think it was the right decision.

StoKeith
Out of interest, what sort of chemistry do you do?
I too am a chemist, doing research in magnetism and materials chemistry for a PhD.
What is the job? Just interested in general.

Stoke in ed - I work in materials chemistry too, but I'm going to a Molecular Biology department to work on teeth basically. I see it as an opportunity to expand my skillset! Are you working with magnetite nanoparticles and stuff like that? Stokeinoz - I like your decision criteria! I don't know if LA is quite the same apart from the last one!

Congratulations on the job in LA, StoKeith. I don't think you will regret your decision. Go there with the right mind set and you will enjoy it far beyond your expectations. The only advice I can add to what has already been posted is that California is an expensive place to live. Write to Becks, maybe he can put you up.

Stoke_in_ed - congratulations! I just had a quick look at it - nice TEM images! By the way, I like the fact that your boss' name is Critter. Dallas - yeah money is a bit of an issue as I'm having to take a cut in pay, but I'm hoping the UK-US tax treaty means that I don't have to pay tax! From what I hear, you don't have to pay tax if you stay less than two years. Any longer and it's retroactive and you have to pay all your previous two years tax in one go! Is that right?

L.A. might be expensive by U.S. standards, but bear in mind that the cost of living is a LOT cheaper than the U.K.
Congrats on the job mate, and good luck with everything!
