Afternoon,
I've recently finished work on a film aout the Potteries dialect which was show at the museum as part of the Dave Follows exhibition.
There's plenty of footage filmed around Stoke and some great archive footage as well.
I've put it on You Tube if anyone wants a look.
Part One -

I love the bit in the second part..
you can go anywhere in the country and say you come from stoke and you can get a job anywhere... and they were proud of it..
They would be disgusted at how this country is going now...
Excellent videos and makes me so proud to be a stokie.

Watched it all through this luchtime... in a word, fantastic. Having spent 30 odd years in the Pot's, it made me feel sad to think that one day the dialect may die away completely. I don't consider myself as having a particularly strong dialect/accent, yet when I leave the area, it's always funny to see people's expressions when you call em 'duck' or say you conner do something I assume this film will be on sale someday soon? Cheers for sharing SteveFoley

Managed to get it- not from Stoke but interesting and well done- nice work fella Not sure if our friend Ronald talking about being Anglo-Saxon speak isn't hamming up his accent for the interview Surprised at how many black people in Stoke working in the mines in the old days

Nice watch. Too many people these days have taken up the sickening 'chav accent'. Bring back the Potteries dialect.

I think a few people 'exagerated' the accent a bit but the chap in question genuinely does speak like that even when you phone him. He also told me that he texted his mates in Potteries.
The film is 9.99 if you go through the website or the museum. Bit more in Webberleys.

steve, what a great film, thankyou . I enjoyed it a lot, it's so rare to find one like this that manages to let everyone talk and think without anyone being patronised (or just being really badly put together like the Ray Johnson films, those do my head in I'm afraid). An exowt (or exalt) just came your way...

Very enjoyable and educational, I'm only 29 and still a lot or mar maytes speak with a potteries twang, it will undoubtably fade out over the next couple of generations with us relying on TV and other medias as our means of comunication, and the fact that we have to travel further afield to find decent work. Enjoy eet whylst eet lasts ducks

Many thanks for the praise. Our intention was to make the film for the people of Stoke so it's great to know a few people enjoyed it. Please feel free to pass on the links to friends and family.

This is probably the first thing I have ever sat there and watching intently in ages. Highly interesting and while it brings a flavour of the potteries in with it the video also manages to capture and portray the passion a lot of us have for living in Stoke-on-Trent, the potteries and it's heritage.
I still use a lot of this dialect now as a 29 year old bloke as in my Dad's house and my Grandad's it has been passed down to me through the generations. It is imprtant for us to have an identity as a city in times where we have had failing industries and regeneration plans that are slow in forth coming. We as a collective people should be proud of what we have here and not run it down and only then can we truly move on to fulfill the potential that the Potteries and indeed Stoke-on-Trent really has. Sadly the dialect amongst my generation seems to be dying out slowly which is a huge shame.
Have some Karma Steve and above all many thanks for one of the most interesting local films I have seen in some time.

Thanks Peter. You've really picked up on what we were trying to do with the film.
I've just started work on a film about Stafforshire food and I hope to have it finished around November. We'll be showing it at the Shire Hall Gallery in Stafford and I'm curently trying to find somewhere to show it in Stoke. Once I've got this sorted I'll start work on it in earnest and I'll put a post up on here so if anyone wants to watch it they can do.

Steve, "Bostin" piece of film. Same sentiments as Petercoateswallet, I was thoroughly engrossed. In my youth ( Some fifty years ago) it was sometimes very hard to understand the Old Miners when they were in conversation in the Pub or Street. Both my daughters are University educated and now speak "Campus English" Please save our Dialect This film is now preserved in my favourites and is being shown to both my Daughters (One is an English Teacher ;D)

What a quality film! I'm sat here sporting my new "Cost keck a bow..." T-Shirt as bought from the club shop yesterday. As an outsider, my granddad and uncle used to confuse the hell out of me with Pottreez Spayk. Arfer Tow Crate should be made compulsory on the Stoke schools syllabus. Excellent work.
