He couldn't turn on a car park but he gave his all for Stoke!
Many happy days watching that near-post corner routine - Paul Maguire (Beckhamesque - ie. only in the team for set pieces) would land a corner kick on Big Bren's head at the near post, who deftly flicked it on for whoever (occasionally Georgie Berry if memory serves!!) to nod it in. Get in there!
Saw the same routine against Norwich the other week, maybe Tone's been watching some old tapes of Star Soccer??
Does anybody remember the 4-4 Luton draw? Big Bren pivoted and lashed a 'hit-and-hope' in from about 40 yards that day. Am I right or have I finally lost it?

Recently watched a video of the Luton 4-4 draw.Me thinks your memory may be playing tricks,Bren's goal was a cracker from about 20 yards.I'll always remember that classic flag displayed at Meadow Lane in the 1978 promotion match "Big Bren strikes at 3"

One of my all time favourite players - not the most skillful but brilliant header of a ball and always gave his best.

Seen him once or twice at the Brit in his club blazer. Doesn't he work for club hospitality or summat?

Big Bren, also one of my favourite John Cleese lookalikes from yesteryear.
If memory serves me right, he is the only Stoke player ever to score with his first touch of the ball (v Hull, I think it was)
Was also a very decent centre half BTW and played there quite a bit at the twilight of his career!

saw him score a top goal away @ Maine Road, turned on the proverbial sixpence & the ball was in the net before Corrigan had even blinked.
Was surpassed only by Trevor Francis perfect chip on the run over Fox in the last minute.
What I really admired Bren for was his consistent ability to hit the wall between the seats & the paddock (Boothen stand) when booting the ball away, cleared the fence every time.

Has to be one of my all time favourite Stoke memories, we get a corner, Big Bren comes on as a sub for his debut, runs into the penalty area and heads the ball into the net. Classic

Remember when he did the front post flick ons from Maguires corners in 82/83? That was ace. John Motson said Paul Maguire taakes a better corner than Eder!

Great guy- great player for us
Regularly in the Waddington suite- also 'scored' on his Republic debut v Wales but the goal was later given as an own goal as the defender got the last touch
The Luton goal was from just outside the box- the week before the famous Notts County game we drew 0-0 with Newcastle- Bren did hit a 35 yard screamer that nearly broke the crossbar- remember talking to their centre half Mick Martin re it years later- was an unbelievable shot
Remember Motty saying that Joe- also that Bren hated folk pronouncing the 'g' in his surname

Remember the run by Chambo to set up Brens goal? That was dazzling. Afterwards Barker said that "Brens been waiting four years for a cross like that"

Absolutely-Chamberlain turned Kenny Sansom inside out that day- to be fair Graham Rix was outstanding for them as well

All praise Michel Plaitini

it was his proposal to bring in the back pass rule, thus ending Kennny Sansoms carear & Liverpools tactics @ a stroke.

Chambo's cornersw were always too low for the front post flick trick. Bren had to stoop so low he looked like a diseased John Cleese!

In his Stoke City debut as a 75th minute substitute in the home match against Hull City on 8 March 1978, Stoke were waiting to take a corner when he came on and he went straight to the penalty area and headed home the cross into the back of the net. In actual game time he had not been on the pitch for more than five seconds and this must therefore be one of the quickest debut goals ever scored. I was at that match as a 10 year old
