Austin edges Brilla 1-0 to win division Austin Aztex News Release - www.austinaztex.com Sunday, July 6, 2008 AUSTIN, TX -- Playing their final regular season home game, the Austin Aztex shut out the Mississippi Brilla, 1-0, and secured first place in the Mid South Division with three away games remaining in the season. The Aztex lead second place El Paso Patriots by 10 points and should the Patriots sweep their final three games and the Aztex lose theirs, the Aztex would win the division by one point. Interestingly, the final regular season game for both teams will occur in El Paso on July 19 when the two teams will face each other. The victory tonight also added to Aztex keeper Miguel Gallardo’s gaudy statistics: he has notched nine shutouts in eleven appearances this season, which leads the league. Despite the 1-0 score, the Aztex seemed to have the upper offensive hand over the Brilla through much of the game. The only score occurred in the 30th minute when forward Jamie Watson took a centering pass from Austin da Luz and beat the Mississippi keeper one on one. As tenacious as the Brilla defense was, the Aztex had only themselves and some bad luck to blame for failing to convert other scoring opportunities. Two shots ricocheted off the side posts, several shots were taken from too great a distance when the Aztex had numerical advantage and several other inside-post shots barely missed their target. The Aztex were even the beneficiaries of a “pass back” infraction inside the Mississippi penalty area which could not be converted. Gallardo and the defense played with conviction, trapped the Brilla offense into committing numerous offsides, kept corner kicks to a minimum and preserved the victory. The first round in the PDL playoffs for the Southern Conference Championship will occur over the weekend of July 25 – 27 at a site to be determined. The top two teams in the Mid South Division (currently the Aztex and El Paso Patriots) and the Southeast Division (currently the Central Florida Kraze and the Atlanta Silverbacks U23’s) will face one another in a single venue. Further announcements can be expected as soon as the schedule and site are determined by USL. In the meantime, the Aztex will be focusing on their upcoming trip to New Orleans for a game against the Shell Shockers on Friday, July 11.
