because this team will run through brick walls for the cause and when Rory Delap states that he can see Stoke within the top 10 then it really is time to sit up and take stock of what he says.
Make no mistake Stoke are one hell of a side.

Only a fool would write us off before we've kicked a ball. Knowing that we're never going to set the world alight 'up there', I'll settle for a backs-to-the-wall season of dross if we can finish 4th bottom.

the worrying part for me is that a very poor newcastle side beat us 4-1 with 10 men! ok we were left chasing the game after conceding early but it was the manner they picked us off with ease. certainly need a new backbone structure to the team, a solid centre half with a big mouth, a box to box midfielder, and a good target man to hold the ball up. but im sure pulis knows that so im going for a 15th place finish.

Stokes strength will be a strong teamwork ethic as Rory Delap was saying today,of course the team will still need strengthening but it is important that any new signings do not detract from the team spirit. We have recently seen in Euro 2008 good examples in Turkey and Croatia(population about the same as Scotland) about teams who have punched above their weight due to strong teamwork.I have a sneaking suspicion that Stoke will exceed the expectations of many posters on this board.

If you read any of the footie mags like 442 etc, you'll see that they do a pre-season preview where they invite fans of the respective teams to predict where their team will finish. No-one and I mean no-one ever says their team will go down! I will be delighted to be wrong and see us finish in the top ten. If that happens I'll eat our cat, I think it's that unlikely. Kingdeano rightly pointed out the mauling we got at the hands of a shite Newcastle team with ten men for an hour. That's the minimum quality we will face week in week out for 90 minutes. A bit more realism would be useful, then we won't be so disappointed next season if we struggle. Let's look to the long term and accept that we may have to bounce between divisions for a few years in the ultimate aim of establishing ourselves. Happy to be called every abusive name under the sun this time next year though if we do stay up! And I'll tell you what Smudge tastes like (that's our cat, not the bloater who runs this board )

When did the rules change so that you get points for running through brick walls? If you seriously think that any side in the Prem taking an objective look at our team will think we are some rough tough outfit then you're kidding yourself. The average size of Prem players has increased by 3ins over the last 6 years. Our current midfield of Lawrence, Delap, Whelan and Cresswell won't only be outplayed by 90% of the Prem they'll be outbattled by 75% of them too!
I've been actively supporting Stoke for 38+ years, I've been dreaming of the day when we get back into the top flight and there's nobody who wants us to do well more than I do but as I keep saying without 5 or 6 key signings we will seriously struggle. The gap is massive and if we do have to be a yo-yo team then fair enough but if we do go down I want us to go down with a bang not an embarassing whimper.
We can't keep the ball and if we haven't got opportunistic goalscorers to take whatever chances we create, if we haven't got pace as an outlet and a proper destroyer in central midfield then we aren't goin to worry too many teams in the Prem regardless of how hard we might try.

Hard to argue with any of that, Godo. After we've finished our summer shopping, we'll be in a much better position to judge how great our chances of finishing 17th are. I've been trying to think of another 4-5 teams who'll complete the mini-league at the bottom - and it's a struggle. Teams like Fulham, Bolton and Wigan are already infinitely stronger than us - and are already adding. I'm just going to try to enjoy the ride.
