Looking to change my Broadband supplier. I was with NTL, but they were taken over by VirginMedia who treat their customers like crap; latest example - they cancel my Direct Debit, without informing me, then send me a bill including £5.00 "payment handling charge" for non-Direct Debit payments.
Any suggestions of alternative suppliers at reasonable prices not run by rip-off merchants like Branson?

If you are on cable then look for another cable supplier don't switch to another supplier who goes down ya phone line just cuz you don't like virgin !
Phone line broadband is dogshit, no matter who the supplier, unless you live in central london right next to the exchange and nobody else is online !

What's wrong with Tiscali TH? I've been with em ages, get the TV and phone with em too now. No problems and good customer service (and cheap for what we get). well happy with tiscali tv - same as sky plus with loads of on demand stuff all for free.

You are definately better staying with a company that supplies broadband through Cable. Routers are cheaper in comparison to an ADSL (Phone Line) router and the connections are a lot faster too The only way to get decent ADSL connection speeds in to be right next to the exchange and hope that no one else is using the internet at the same time as you. The further away you are from the exchange then the slower your connection because of signal attenuation (degradation). Virgin Media actually supply the fastest broadband in the country ATM because of using fibre optic cables, which are a lot higher quality wires than phone lines and hardly suffer signal attenuation As much as people hate the money grabbing beardy cunter that is Richard Branson, you may have to 'bite the bullet' and take his broadband

SRF,
"As much as people hate the money grabbing beardy cunter that is Richard Branson, you may have to 'bite the bullet' and take his broadband".
Too late - my mind is already made up to move from Virgin, not, as I've said, because of the actual service, but because of their abysmal customer "care".

It's a bastard isn't it? For the company that does give the quickest broadband service, they cock it fucking up with shitty customer care The only other cable company I can think of is Pipex and I know they're utter dogshit when it comes to both service and customer care

Funny you say that SRF, 'cos I've got Pipex Homecall for my (land line) phone calls, and perfectly happy with that.

Hmmmm.. I swear Pipex broadband was cable. My mistake I suppose when it comes to broadband it's everyone to their own. I'm giving advice through speaking to customers where I work (PC World) and their experiences. Tiscali, Pipex and BT were all the main complaints. 1 out of 10 times it was their router but the rest of the time it was problems with their customer care or connection I've had Sky for the last year and they've been highly reliable. Never had to ring them about any problems. Yeah the router is a bit shit and can only reach the back room but that's easily sorted by buying a new one. You'd just have to make sure that you're close to the exchange point

Thanks for all the advice, but may end up sticking with Virgin Media after all.
I made a complaint to them by e-mail, to which they replied by phone within 1/2 hour- the Direct Debit cancellation was an error on their part, for which they apologise, and I've been given a £25 credit on my account by way of recompense. Prepared to give them a 2nd chance.

We've had the same problem with Virgin Jukebox First they tell me that broadband and telephone line plus £7.95 for all inclusive local calls will never cost more than £35 per -month Last months bill was £67 This month £68 And because I agreed a "verbal" contract via phone in February they will not let me cancel my subscription until Feb 09...if I do then I cough up £35 x 8 to terminate the contract Which is scandalous, I'm thinking of just cancelling it then fuck-em, they've had a fortune off me already Next time I see that bearded c.u.n.t in a hot air ballooon I'll get my air-rifle out

I would recommend BE (which is part of O2 now) if your exchange has been enabled for it. £18 for unlimited at 24MB Its much faster than any BB i've tried before. fast connection too with a free wireless router. Use me as a referal and you will get free connection saving about £35

As I said, will now give them another chance - amazing how quick you get a response when you complain and say you're thinking of changing providers isn't it - but will seriously look at O2 (or BE) if the bearded git annoys me again. Thanks for all the advice.
