Welcome back Paratrooper...!!
The transition to civvy street must be a hard one I would imagine and I congratulate you and your colleagues for the professionalism you guys show, when on active service.
Just a quick question...What's the morale like amongst the guys out there...and what is the ultimate goal do reckon in Afghanistan...? Will we ever beat the Taliban....?
13 dead this month.....

forgot to say where would you prefer the fight here or over there in my eyes that is the goal keeping them away

Well...I'm not so sure that the average Taliban sniper would ever have the opportunity to fight over here....however there are militants over here who do have sympathy for their cause. It's a very difficult situation...and not one I am qualified to answer.. ???

you would assume the goal is to return Afghanistan to how it was pre- russian invasion days , a relatively stable progressive country . Kabul was a very vibrant cosmopolitan city at the time

welcome back, safe and sound. What an entrance, bet there was a few tears about. We've got the new Mercian regiment (which includes the Staffs) marching through Northwich next Monday, I'll be there to wish them well, my lad is street lining with the air cadets.

Welcome home.
Thanks for serving the interests of the American government and their wider geo-political strategy. Thanks for helping to line the pockets of the Texan old boys club in our name.
Thanks also for posting on here, knowing that this bunch of half-wits will congratulate you.
Keep convincing yourself that your protecting this country and not attacking another, I wish I could do that as well as you appear to be able to.

biddulph, you don't have to agree with the war (I don't either) to welcome a fellow Stokie home who's been risking his life and soldiers don't get to pick and choose what wars they fight.

They just follow the orders of their commanders, who follow the orders of the Government , that we (as a nation) elected .

Biddulph - are you sure you are not confusing the situation in Iraq with the situation in Afghanistan?
My opinion, for what it is worth, is that Iraq was a big mistake by Blair in doing what Bush asked him to do. Whereas much as I regret the need to occupy Afghanistan I don't see any alternative. Unlike Iraq, Afghanistan was a real threat to all of us and if we left now not only would Afghanistan return to being a threat but Pakistan would soon become an equally big threat.

Utter balls Fornside. Just how exactly was Afghanistan a threat to us? Or are you confusing Afghanistan with the 15 Saudi Arabian nationals that attacked the World Trade Centre? I think you will find that Wahhabism is most widespread in Saudi, and any real terrist threat will eminate from there. Hardly suprising that the House of Saud spend 50million plus per year on personal protection, since we and the Americans have systematically raped the country's oil and seen to it that only the House of Saud benefit. The rest of the Saudi's are dirt poor.
So no, I'm not confused by the two different but inexorably linked situations, but maybe you are.
Ilford - I dont see the need for someone to fish for congratulations for doing what is after all their job. Nobody forced this guy into the army, and the sacrifices he makes he does with a choice. I've just come off an oil rig - do I post stupid messages hoping that I'll be congratulated for my hard work providing oil for you? No I dont, because I do it for myself, and so does he. That is my point.

Sorry to disagree Biddulph. But, as far as I can see, the only significant connection (in terms of a threat to our security) between Afghanistan and Iraq was in George Bush's mind - or what passes for a mind.

Well fornside, we are all entitled to our opinions. I think you're being a bit naive to suggest that there was no strategy involved, but thats of course up to you.
Is it a coincidence that yesterday, four major oil companies (BP, Shell, Total and ExxonMobil) have been granted access to Iraqi oilfields?
Is it a coincedence that Hamad Karzai was previously on the board of a pipeline firm in the USA?
Is it plausible that the US were shitting in thier pants at the thought of a major upheaval in Saudi Arabia? The fall of the house of Saud and an end to the oil for arms exchange that has been going on for years. Dont you think this is all part of an effort to reduce their reliance on Saudi oil? If things go wrong there, the U.S economy will crumble. BIG TIME!

Me - sorry to be so blunt but erm, fuck off.
I'll sit here and judge all day long if I want to. I have the right to do that, just like anyone in the UK has the right (and the duty) to know what they are fighting for before they go to a foreign country and take somebody's life.
Excuse me if I find that, and the persons obvious need for congratulation, slightly offensive.
Go back to your pond.

Why are you wading in the guy for saying how pleased he is to be home and catching up with mates and family. If you did post about being home from a rig, I would say welcome back to you as fellow Stokie even though you have not been dodging bullets for months. Your bang out of order youth!

British forces have always sworn to protect the innocent.
Little has changed.
whatever people think of the so called war and it's outcome we cannot leave these people un-protected you only have to look at the way africa conduct free speach to see why we do what we do.
I'm not great at all this ladi dah posh talk and maybe i don't quite get my word across but I like many soldiers fight to protect those that cannot protect themselves.
