Did a 12 month stint on continental shifts as an 18 year old and it was bloody hard work. Like everything else these days it's being outsourced and the Tunstall factory will close after 123 years, the end of an era......

I worked as a student at the Hanley factory, not sure it was the same Johnson's (just up from Limekiln bank) I took a group of students for a tour of the Palace of Westminster, guided by Mark Fisher MP He was brilliant on the day and made it very interesting for the students. He was an expert on Pugin. Some tiles were being replaced in the entrance. The originals were made by Spode. Mark tried to get the replacements made in Stoke-on-Trent. No factory could make them anymore ....apparently something to do with the pattern going through the entire tile , not just on the surface. The replacements were made in Italy. www.shop.parliament.uk/products/30357

Does anyone know where production has been moved to It’ll be Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria, Poland and Turkey I would imagine. You can get even cheaper products from India and Vietnam but transport is a nightmare at the moment with the Suez/Arab peninsular situation. Used to work there for a very long time (which was great) but left many years ago and really feel for the staff being made redundant.

So sad it really is to see what this city has become and this country by and large.

Awful news but not surprising in the slightest. I went in to help the staff at their sister company Norcros Adhesives when it shut last year and I was amazed JT was carrying on as the Adhesives business was always supposedly the company in the group that made a profit. It's been well known that Tiles was losing money.
It's been a yearly thing where they make staff redundant and that just isn't sustainable. A real shame though.
