Hear a lot of negative comments on here about female commentators and pundits but I have to say that Pien (currently doing Middlesbrough v Leeds right now) is as good as any male commentator (no reason why not btw). Think she’s got a great future and will soon be doing premier league and better

No male bias here, Carragher, Redknapp, etc get slagged off all the time. Can people not critique female pundits?

She's incredible!!!🥹 She's fine and better than many of the dire female commentators being thrown onto games at the moment but not sure of the purpose of the thread?

I have heard her on several games and to me the best point is the commentator just blends in with the game not distract you with comments/opinion.

No male bias here, Carragher, Redknapp, etc get slagged off all the time. Can people not critique female pundits? They can but a lot of the male pundits are woeful and it is not highlighted in the same way - I know you have just mentioned a few names, but cant remember many posts on here re how bad Redknapp and Carragher are - or seeing too much about them on SM. However, poor female punditry is brought up on a regular basis, almost highlighted on a daily basis these days and wherever you look on SM - you do have to wonder why it is ok for men to be shite at something but totally unacceptable for a woman to be crap at the same thing - and why people like Barton have to single the women out but, strangely, he has never been as passionate at singling out the raft of rank mediocrity that we all have to endure when it comes to male pundits. When it comes to football, there is a little bit of a chauvinistic boys club going on, unlike other sports, where some men don't appreciate or value the opinions of the females or in Barton's case don't think they are qualified to comment on the gods that play the male version of the game. Personally, I see double standards - I have watched and played footie for over 50 years and talk about it every day with my male friends, in that time I can't recall many conversations about how crap male commentators were, occasionally the odd he gets on my tits(remember Hugh Johns), a few times they mentioned the good ones they loved(Motty) but very few passionate conversations about it - however I get it in the ear all the time about females being rubbish(some of them are shocking), but not all of them, and the ones that are excellent - well, they are just described as decent aren't they

Michael Owen used to get ripped into for being useless, as have lots of others. There are several female commentators that don't get abuse because they're good commentators. However, there are one or two that are absolutely woeful and get talked about a lot. There are loads of posts on here about the current radio stoke presenter and Nigel Johnson used to get ripped before he retired. I'm sure that some people have biased views but the majority do not.

About Pien Meulensteen
Pien Meulensteen is a sports presenter, reporter, and commentator, currently working for Sky Sports, ITV, DAZN and Amazon Prime. She is the youngest and first female to commentate on a live Premier League game on Sky Sports, and took home the 'One to Watch' award at the 2023 Sports Journalism Awards.
Last year she smashed her FIFA World Cup 2022 debut, as co-commentator for the tournament in Qatar for the BBC. Since then her career has gone from strength to strength, as a well known voice covering Premier League, EFL, WSL and international football. Along the way she has been noticed by global brands such as Canada Goose, who named her as one of their most recent Brand Ambassadors.
Pien has worked across a variety of platforms, delivering confident, factual, and entertaining broadcasts whilst keeping the audience at the heart of everything she does. She is a regular reporter for IMG Premier League Productions, broadcasting to an international audience on some of the biggest games in world football. Pien was the first reporter on location for Premier League Today when Steve Bruce departed Newcastle United, delivering a calm and concise report under pressure. She also reported on Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford at the start of the 2021/22 season - conducting live reports and interviews as part of the studio programme.
Pien was born in a small town in the Netherlands and, after four years in Qatar, moved to the UK in 2001. Being fluent in both English and Dutch she recently reported from the FA Cup Final in May 2021 for the leading sports broadcaster in the Netherlands, Ziggo Sport. Pien presented the pre-match broadcast live from Wembley in Dutch and conducted post-match interviews in both languages.
From her experience working in the Premier League and Women’s Super League, Pien’s insight has led her to becoming a regular contributor to BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC World Service, providing in-depth analysis of upcoming fixtures and breaking news stories.
Pien began her broadcasting career at BBC Manchester whilst working towards her First Class Honours degree in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Salford. Pien worked on the biggest local sporting events in the calendar alongside her studies. After learning the ropes behind the scenes at the BBC, Pien quickly became a part of the on-air sports presenting team, reading the sports bulletins on the breakfast show and reporting from football matches and sporting events across Greater Manchester.
A strong on-air presence and knowledge of the game saw Pien become a regular presenter and commentator for MUTV, providing play-by-play commentaries on Manchester United Women’s football team whilst also hosting Premier League match days on location and in the studio with a variety of well-known pundits. Pien also regularly fronts Manchester United’s social media channels, hosting their weekly ‘UTD Predictions’ episodes to an audience of over 100 million.
