Evening all,
Recently purchased footy cards of the 1972 final team, wanted to mount them in formation of the day in a frame, it was all inside forwards etc that's lost me.
Of course defence I know, but its the way the midfield and forward line would have been set that has lost me a little
Any help greatly appreciated.
Up the Potters, we are safe for another year!!

Waddo had a fetish for small inside forwards. From promotion season onwards he would regularly play four or five "inside forwards" in the same team All interchanging with the striking positions etc. Mudie, McIlroy, Vernon, Violett, Dobing, Eastham and probably more I can't recall.

I can’t see many clubs setting up like that…mainly 442 so was Waddo a bit before his time? A bit of a pioneer 🔴⚪️

Thanks for info, I was 6 yrs old in 72, so recall not so great. 1st proper memory was March 1975 beating Liverpool 2-0 - Conroy both....from then on the players and roles is clearer. See you're Smallthorn, my late parents lived above the Post office in High St when 1st wed, it was still there few years back when I had a ride round the area, I m Norwich now.

Wasn't Conroy on the right? That team was a hybrid after harry Burrows was on way out. Eastham used to play as a deep lying left wide man. TC used to switch wings to great effect with Greenhoff and Ritchie in the front two. TC also used to play centre forward on occasions. Waddo was the Pep of his day 😄

Waddo always liked his wingers. Sometimes just playing the one and overloading on other wing with pej or marsh. Jimmy Robertson Harry Burrows Terry Conroy in part Geoff Salmons Gerry Bridgwood To name a few. The team really settled with the signing of Hudson though who became the fulcrum.
