In the 60 or so years I have watched Stoke , it has to be up there
It is perplexing
On the one hand they seem to have some elegant players , but they seem so lacking in spine
I don’t see much talkers on the pitch and I am putting that down to a very characterless captain .
They don’t seem to have any “ muck and bullets “ types - I was thinking of a Mickey Thomas type here
They don’t have the foundation of a Cranston/ Overson pairing in the centre of the defence
And O for a Greenhoff or a Stein in attack

Just trying to think of the worst XI of players that have played regularly This is what I’d go for: Butland Martina Williams Wilmot Ward Laurent Allen Mikel Leris Vokes Fosu Please though if I’ve missed someone obvious let me know. And to preempt: Re Butland not Bonham or Bursik - I just think Butland was terrible In that first season down. At fault for 5/6 goals and just had no confidence or anything. Verlinden

Is this the worst team we’ve put together since relegation? And I’m not just talking about ability (I genuinely think we’ve got some half decent players) Overall as a team it is for me, don’t score enough, defence is appaling and don’t seem to have much fight in them. I know we've made some defensive blunders, but I think a lot of our 'poor defence' stems from having such a shit attack and an inability by our midfield to keep possession and control a game. We're 19th our of 24 in attack and 15th out of 24 in defence. The lack of goals we've scored all season has been the biggest issue imo. Averaging less than a goal a game, and even worse when you consider we put 4 past Rotherham. 17 games this season where we haven't scored a single goal. Our midfield yesterday was outshone by a 5’ 7” 34 year old midfielder who at times even out jumped them in ariel duals. Before the dust settles at seasons end and out of contract/loan players have left we’ll be left with a core of midfield players of Laurent, Baker, Johnson, Pearson. Collectively will they see SCFC progress? Frightening? I’m not sure if Leris and Vidigal are classed as forwards or midfielders……but the same applies.

Mikel wasn’t that bad was he? He had a solid enough season for us. I’d put Woods in his place. Ince and Afobe would have to be in there too. Some of the shite signed straight after relegation was astonishing.

For me it’s all about the defence. You get away with it at every level of football if you have a defence that does its job. We got to the Premier League and became fixtures there based on a solid defence. Since relegation we’ve gradually dismantled a decent defence and replaced it with players who either can’t defend or don’t want to. Last season we averted this type of situation simply because we had Jagielka. This season without him and replacing him with the likes of Rose and McNally we’re pretty much a sitting duck. Teams look at us and think we can get at these. If I could give Schumacher one piece of advice it would be to sign three players who are good defenders first and foremost. Spot on. Every single great team is based on a solid defence. It's the foundation that a great team is based on, making yourself hard to beat is always the first objective towards winning. The fact that AN and RM ignored that is a big reason why we're in this fucking mess. I think if you are going to build on a strong defence, then you need to look to build a strong defence which I don’t think we ever really have. We then want to play defensively without having the tools. But having better goalscorers would also help that side of things.

I’d go 5-3-2 because that has also been our most shit formation across all the managers (the Jones diamond being the absolute worst but special to his squad) Bonham Duhaney Chester Flint Clark Sparrow Woods Oakley-Boothe Celina Gayle Wesley Super sub: Duffy

I've said this many times before, but I will go to my grave in full belief that I am a better footballer than Martina. He was pathetic beyond belief.
