I do. The risk is massive if you don’t play your best players. And if they’re fit enough to be on the bench they should be starting. Guardiola often puts his best players on the bench. Thomas Frank has Toney on the bench today. Klopp has put Salah on the bench before if he’s not quite right. They’re three fairly decent managers. 0-2 without him 2-0 with him Great plan? Genuinely think we win it easy if he had started but then I would say that I guess 🤣🤣

The manager got his team spot on IMO. Haks can't finish but as Cavanagh said pre match, him and Mmaee link up well and they did. Mmaee put him in god knows how many times in that first half and opened up West Brom like a can of beans.
Burger on the bench I don't think was that controversial. I really like Burger but he was garbage last game and Thompson is good value to do a job in there when needed.
It worked and we didn't give the Baggies a kick in that first 45 minutes, and how they went in 1 nil up I'll never know.

As it was he came on energised and made a big impact. Quality management.

The reason we weren't winning at half time had naff all to do with Burger or any other centre midfielder not being on the pitch. We created enough to score at least 2 or maybe 3 goals. We didn't due to very poor finishing. Having Burger on the pitch wouldn't have made any difference to that. I'm a massive fan of Burger. I'm pretty sure every Stoke fan too. And I was equally perplexed when I saw the team news. But get off your high horse and just admit that the selected team was good and it was effective. We were the better team for both halves.

Laurent at fault for both (especially the 1st when he just stopped tracking the scorer) if you want to pick fault. Otherwise he had a great game and I'm not his biggest fan...

They are. But are they as good as bayern is on Football Manager, that's the question? Guardiola swaps Phil Foden for a World Cup winning striker who would get into every other PL teams starting XI. The Brentford manager is an idiot for doing that as the result showed. And Liverpool don’t look the same when they rest Salah. And I can make a very good argument about Klopp massively underachieving at Liverpool. I didn’t address that because I thought it was a quite ridiculous notion. We have 5 cup finals. You play your best player in each of them.

It never ceases to amaze me that people can't grasp that professional footballers are athletes and their bodies have to be protected against a regular programme of three games a week. Footballers are not machines. Some are more capable of enduring the physical demands placed upon them. Burger is a major asset in our squad but the signs have been clear that his physiology is more frail than others in the squad. Withdrawing him from games with fifteen minutes to go proves questionable to many as is Burger not starting? West Brom then Sheffield Wednesday then Swansea are our recent fixtures and Burger has a safe period of two and a half games in him without overtaxing his capability. Ss is doing a great job with his squad of players. The team no longer lays down when they go behind and I believe Burger will play a very prominent roll in our next two fixtures.

He had 3 weeks off and then played 1 game. If he can’t hack that then he needs to sort himself. Burger is our best player and when we have a run of cup finals which we have, he should play in every one of them.

Just seems like some good logical thinking to me 🤣 Because he closes the space Laurent failed to do for both of their goals and he’s one of the best central midfielders in this league?

I’m not sure we’ve created as many clear cut chances in one half as we did that first half. Burger is excellent but he needs managing. He looked well off the pace against Huddersfield. Now he’s had a break, made an impact in a good sub appearance and hopefully is capable of playing in our next two matches which are huge. You say daft, I (and it seems a few others) say proactive and brave management.

Why Laurent went with him is anyone’s guess as the right back was there. Awful from him. Tbh at the time I noticed that but didn’t notice him at the time for the first. Just abject defending from him on both goals.

Looks like he was struggling v Hudders as you say, maybe something we don't know, knock etc and a reason he didn't start. Midfield is so much more more fluent without Pearson and move the ball well. Beat Swans and all looks good 👍

His break. He had 3 weeks then had just played 1 game. A break 🤣🤣🤣 As ever they are wrong. As the result shows. Deluded. How? He literally had 3 weeks off and then played 1 game and you’re buying that he needed a rest and not questioning that in any way shape or form. It’s either overly cautious poor management. Or Burger needs to sort his fitness/resilience out because that isn’t acceptable. I think it’s actually a bit of both from all of the evidence we’ve seen from the rest of the season.

The fact you describe basic midfield play as being superman says a lot about expectation and standards.

I think Glen Whelan got it right when he said he runs too much instead of sitting and dictating from centre field.

He’s a box to box midfielder, it’s literally his job. Whelan had the fortune to play for a manager who when a central midfield colleague of his scored he said “what the fuck was he doing there” to Dave Kemp. Playing Thompson was the correct call yesterday but not having Burger in there too hurt us. It always will as long as we’re at this level and he’s still our player.

Well some times he is better than at other times. He seems to find himself on the wrong side of the attacking player quite a lot and has to foul. He would still have not been there to block Asante. I think you over estimate his importance.
