Would be great if they added some info boards and graphics behind it I think. Would add more character to that bit of the ground and would just look good and would inform people who might not know who he is (which will only increase as time goes on) his story. Or they could read the plaque on the plinth.

Great news. Could Stoke fans of the era help me out? With such a wonderful record, did he come close to international honours? If not, how come? He was a pretty decent, old fashioned centre forward of the sort that many of the clubs of the time had at least one, and sometimes two of, on their books. Always gave his all and was an acknowledged hard case but was probably not really mobile enough to be selected for England, especially when the game began to change in the mid to late 60's. There were also a lot of players of a similar type to choose from through his era (Astle, Chivers, Hurst, Osgood, Jones etc). Many pundits who influenced England team selection to a good degree considered Stoke a very mediocre and highly unfashionable club which didn't help Ritchie's case much either. He wasn't the only one in that unfortunate situation during that era - see also Greenhoff, Hudson and Smith. A really interesting and insightful answer to my question. Thanks.

50 years today since he scored yet another two goals for us, it was fitting to see Big John moved to a more prominent position.

I was there today to listen to Simon King and Nigel Johnson speak very well about why the statue was moved and then Nigel talking about John Ritchie. My one gripe would be the lack of a microphone because it was very hard to hear what was being said at times. It was good to see Greenhoff,Conroy,Bernard,Burrows(I think)Lees,Mike McDonald and John Ruggiero also. Interesting to see that John Walters was also in attendance but the chairman was nowhere to be seen until his usual arrival time of around 2-15

It’s really strange.

Also the saddest thing for me was watching Terry Conroy drive away and not stay for the game, but it comes as no surprise given the way he’s been treated

This has been advertised for sale for a good while now to be fair, I'm suprised the family haven't been able to, or wanted to perhaps club together and keep it within the family going forwards so to speak. Can't imagine it would have the same appeal to anyone else unless an avid collector or John Richie fan fancied displaying it.

Think it was a bit like "you never knew what you had till it's gone" syndrome when he joined Wednesday. I nearly cried standing on the stoke end when he was warming up in the blue and white shirt. Revitalised the Club when he came back and seemed to have added something to his game. Good golfer as well.
