So punish the innocent athletes for a war they have nothing to do with. It’s not like they actually elected this dictator.

It's harsh for them but they're there in representation of a nation, and if that nation is rightly banned then it's them that take the hit. They're free to look for other citizenship options, or try to renounce their representation of Russia.. in some competitions they've been allowed to compete as "independents" haven't they.

I doubt anyone will change their views on the war in Ukraine because Russia are or are not in a sports tournament. Maybe your mind is that malleable though 😉 Does anyone on here suddenly believe that the Qatari regime aren’t committing human rights violations because they hosted a World Cup? If you punish them and don't allow them to compete, it will change minds. If they didn't select Qatar and if people had boycotted, that sends a message. There is no way we should have participated in 2018 in Russia after what Putin ordered on British soil. But we appeased the fucker again. Think the issue was more to do with timings. The Salisbury poisoning was in March and the 2018 WC just 3 months later when all preparations had been made. I agree that we should have boycotted the finals but for it to have been meaningful more countries needed to have followed suit. Putin would just have laughed at us if we’d have gone alone. Personally think that we have appeased him for many years with Georgia, Crimea, Salisbury & now Ukraine. The problem is that he has weaponised his nuclear deterrent in a way that it was not meant for, ie he is using it as a threat should NATO enter the war directly with conventional weapons. This is very concerning for the 21st century as China, Iran & North Korea could threaten their nuclear weapons in the same way. I doubt this was ever envisaged in the MAD era of the C20th

Dear all, Leading up to the Euro tournament in June this year, I am conducting some research looking at fans’ views towards the role of football in response to military conflict. For those interested in this topic, I have created a short survey that should not take up too much of your time: doit.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9zZmrJfShOSBDDw Participation is completely voluntary, but I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this topic. I wasn't quite sure how to make this comment because I don't really intend to spark a debate, but to give a general bit of feedback I found that the grouping and implied equivalence of the wars in Ukraine and Gaza made a few of these questions practically impossible to answer. The treatment of one should not be the same as the treatment of the other.

So punish the innocent athletes for a war they have nothing to do with. It’s not like they actually elected this dictator. Exactly. Imagine you're a dedicated ufc fighter residing in the USA training your bag off to reach the top of your sport and just because you happen to be a Russian citizen you're told we aren't going to let you fight. Its bollox. And if anything it benefits Putin because he can say look how the west treat you. This notion that banning individual Russian athletes will help to make them over turn their government is nonsense. The ufc made the right call regarding the BLM nonsense and the covid nonsense and its making the right call about not banning people from participation simply because of where they are born...

Football or any other sport has no impact on military actions. What they say and do is just virtue signalling. Sport should be be non political. Poppies on shirts ≤ kneeling before kick off. Poppies are an act of remembrance and has no politically motives & neither is taking the knee, although seen by many as controversial, it’s an act of support for anti-racism. I know many will disagree, but it’s just my opinion. It’s ironic that taking the knee is booed and kind of proves the point of it

I think it should be held in the Corinthian spirit as one of the greatest achievements of civilization and not tarnished by individual, group or political ideology Though some wag will also point out that my above statement is political 😂
