It's probably in the wrong forum (sorry admin) but I am in dire need of a decent local laptop repairer as mine has gone tits up when I turned it on - I cannot live without it. Help please anyone with any recommendations for repairers....... ???

Throw it down the stairs and claim on the house insurance.

Foxystash, I guess there would be more local places but I used the following for a replacement screen for mine. I dont know if they'd be any use to you but here's the website:- www.cambridgelaptoprepair.co.uk/

Cost £900 a couple of years ago and I have pics of little 'un on there from this year so whilst a new one is great, I need to get the data off the hard drive on it. I have a restore disk in-hand, but don't want to use it as it will re-format the hard disk ??? If it's any help to anyone providing a solutuion, it boots to the XP screen (with logo in the middle) then gives a blue screen for a microsecond then reboots ??? ???

I take it the blue screen doesn't hang about long enough for you to read the message? If you can read it, there's normally an error code which you can use to troubleshoot the problem.
Have you tried booting into safe mode?

Have you tried booting into safe mode? It's about half a second then disappears. Tried safe-mode and to command prompt, but same result.

A blue screen normally means a memory issue. However the laptops hard drive should be removable. (Panel underneath) remove harddrive and with a usb slave case you should be able to connect it to another computer and it will simply read as a second usb device / disk drive. I use an old laptop hard drive as a usb portable 25Mb drive

Thanks guys. Will do a bit of reading and finger crossing. Little un will be in bed shortly and missus is going out so it will a late one - she's happy to be out as well as I am in a right cob over this (initially blamed her as she infected it with a virus last time through pissing about and downloading shite) Pickygame - the caddy is certainly cheaper than data recovery if the HDD is ok!!! Thanks.

Sorry, just read my post again and realised I've typed bollocks regarding the recovery console. You can use it to make adjustments to the system, but you can't copy data from the hard drive.
Do what pickygame says if you need to recover files.

OK, seem to have it down to a problem with the boot record on the hard disk. Have tried to open via the caddy using my PC, but it will recognise the 2 partitions on the HDD, but not open either partition - it just ask me if I want to format them
